A long-awaited rule to protect workers from heat stress moves forward, even under Trump
While labor experts say the regulation is progressing quickly, advocacy groups wonder what has taken so long
OSHA could withdraw its landmark draft regulation on heat protections, but it hasnβt and is currently in the middle of soliciting input from the general public about the proposed policy, reports @fridagarza.bsky.social at @grist.org

This week the sale of Kotaku to Keleops, the buyers of Gizmodo, was announced. Coming on the heels of Redbrick, a Canadian company, buying both Quartz as well as The Inventory, this leaves G/O Media with just The Root. And while The Root is a wonderful site and a very good business it is now abundantly clear that G/O Media is and has been working towards a full wind down."

the city has frequently said they aim to make curbside composting the obvious, easy solution for food waste. it still has a lot of critics who say sending food scraps to become methane is not actually composting! curious to see how its messaging around this evolves over time

Asked to respond to these criticisms, [Vincent] Gragnani, the press secretary for DSNY, said, βWould the βlocal environmental advocatesβ you spoke with prefer that we use fracked gas to heat homes and businesses? Unfortunately, their rhetoric can discourage participation and send more food and yard waste to release methane in faraway landfills.β
this is what DSNY said when i asked them to respond to criticisms about this practice:

the place that most of your food scraps go to, these giant digester eggs in greenpoint, produces methane -- ideally to heat homes, but sometimes when the digesters make too much methane, it gets flared off. in any case, it's not compost
10.04.2025 18:31 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
As of now, food waste that gets picked up by DSNY will usually wind up in one of two places: a composting facility on Staten Island or a wastewater-treatment plant on the edge of Brooklyn and Queens. But last year, DSNY reported that only one-fifth of food waste collected actually makes it to the composting facility. The rest is sent to the wastewater-treatment plant in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenpoint. (Asked for updated figures, [DSNY press secretary Vincent] Gragnani said the department did not have a precise breakdown, as the numbers often fluctuate.)
in other cities that have been composting for a looong time, there's a "story" about what happens to your food scraps. they go in the bin, a hauler collects your smelly waste, some stuff happens, it becomes compost that gets used by farmers! in NYC, this only happens to 1/5 of your food waste
10.04.2025 18:31 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
But critics say the city should focus more on educating residents on the benefits of composting.
βMy concern is that, instead of doing outreach, weβre focusing on fear-mongering,β said Lou Reyes, a local composting advocate.
one criticism i've heard of fining NYers for not separating their food scraps (aka "organics") is that it puts composting in the same bucket as other public nuisances you could get a ticket for - like riding your bike on the sidewalk

New York City is making people compost β or pay up
New Yorkers can now get fined for not separating their food scraps. Some critics say that's not the right approach.
i wrote about curbside composting ramping up in nyc, which is contingent on getting people to care about compost (or at least fear getting a ticket) grist.org/food-and-agr...

The Growing Allure of Insect Poop - Ambrook Research
Bugs could connect the ends of the food system by eating waste and creating fertilizer. But the industry will take time to hatch, experts say.
Mealworm poop has shown off-the-charts results as a natural fertilizer, far outperforming its traditional counterparts. So why aren't we using it more?
