Indonesia’s steel expansion risks a surge in greenhouse gas emissions JAKARTA β€” Indonesia’s steel industry is becoming one of the country’s fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions, even as it receives far less public attention than other carbon-intensive…

Indonesia’s steel sector β€” already a major emitter β€” could grow far more polluting as global demand rises, a nonprofit report warns.

Coal-based production drives both climate emissions and local health risks, while current policies lack binding targets and enforcement.

Yes! I organized one for friends and family. I rented a space, ordered appetizers, and printed out a poster of my book cover. My friends brought a cake decorated like my book cover too. It wasn't for self-promotion, it was to recognize a milestone in my life. It was joyous and a great memory.

A street parking spot that's been shoveled out and someone has placed a patio chair and a metal radiator to reserve the spot. The radiator is on a wooden pallet.

Going to attempt bringing the stroller outside after 2 weeks of near-impassable sidewalks on our walk to daycare. Still going to take the bus for most of it, but hopefully most of the intersections are clear enough by now.

But the other piece of evidence -- the point of this thread -- is that we now have an example of what it looks like when US political & corporate elites *really are* obsessed with and committed to something.

Namely: AI.

One of the main things I've learned through experience and science is the difference between steaming and browning (by sautΓ© or roasting)... Too many things in the pan = you only are cooking with steam and it won't get hot enough to brown.

πŸ’» Current bottom-up emission models for natural flooded ecosystems miss critical dynamics.
🌐 Many widely used models underestimated wetland and inland-water emissions and their dynamics during the surge, highlighting urgent gaps in monitoring wet ecosystems and microbial methane emission processes.

🌧️ Exceptionally wet conditions during a prolonged La NiΓ±a (2020–2023) boosted methane emissions from wetlands and inland waters, especially in tropical Africa and Southeast Asia, with additional increases in Arctic regions.

😷 COVID-19–related air pollution changes played a central role.
Reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOβ‚“) during pandemic lockdowns reduced OH levels, allowing methane to accumulate faster in the atmosphere.
🌿 Climate-driven wetland emissions amplified the surge.

The key findings are:
πŸ§ͺ This early-2020s methane surge was mainly caused by a weakened atmospheric chemistry sink, not runaway emissions.
🌍 A temporary drop in hydroxyl (OH) radicalsβ€”the atmosphere's primary methane "cleanser" explains about 80–85% of the year-to-year variability in methane growth.

The Methane spike in the early 2020’s has been explained in two new studies. A combination of weakened atmospheric removal and increased emissions from warming wetlands, rivers, lakes, and agricultural land are to blame.

Jeffrey Epstein infiltrated science because it was ready to accommodate him What could β€œnerd tunnel vision” possibly mean?

From 2019: Jeffrey Epstein liked to describe himself as a β€œscience philanthropist,” and academics liked to take his money.

As more of Epstein’s enablers are uncovered, it’s worth asking why it was so easy for him to infiltrate science in the first place.

Methane pollution from US oil and gas infrastructure causes more climate change than the entire economies of all but seven nations on earth.

(This is with methane's climate impacts conservatively evaluated over a 100-year time frame. Evaluated over shorter time frames, methane's impacts are worse.)
