Like rainforests, kelp forests act as the ocean's "lungs", absorbing COβ and releasing oxygen. Yet, they're under threat from overfishing, pollution, and changing ocean temperatures.
This UNEP report examines their status and provides guidance on restoration: www.unep.org/resources/re...

02.06.2025 03:40 β π 81 π 20 π¬ 1 π 1Conclusions from Alβs presentation: β’ Iron limitation will not make a significant contribution to ocean carbon dioxide removal, even if tech challenges to scalability are dealt with β’ ~4 years of emissions assuming the most optimal (impossible to achieve) scenario β’ The similarity of the 'fingerprint' of OlF on ocean biogeochemistry to climate change will make MRV very difficult β’ Negative impacts on fisheries will compound climate effects and may emerge after 15-20 years after initiation of OlF β’ Hampering our ability to reverse course or cease π
@altagliabue.bsky.social making a presentation at @ucl.ac.uk telling us that ocean iron fertilization wonβt do jack for climate and will further harm fisheries.
Yet, itβs the marine COβ removal (mCDR) method that has sold the most credits so far. π€·π»ββοΈ
A new global analysis reveals that if we allow seagrass decline to continue unchecked, as much as 1,154 Tg of Carbon Dioxide could be released back into the atmosphere from meadows at risk, accelerating the climate crisis we are trying to prevent.
