How we get back into summer reading
The summer solstice is a few days away, schools are wrapping up, libraries are offering more programming - every reader knows these are signs for one of the biggest reading events of the year: summer reading. It’s finally here, Furious Readers, and we have something really special planned.
As Read Furiously celebrates its ten years, we’ve been spending some time thinking about the next ten years. Our publishing house was founded on the needs of our readers - readers who loved to read, but needed a sustainable reading experience. We want to continue this promise that we made ten years ago and so we introduce to you the first Read Furiously summer experience. Every summer will focus on an important reading technique necessary for a sustainable reading journey.
To begin this summer’s reading conversation, we wanted to focus on our bestselling, flagship series - the One ‘n Done series. Our specially designed pocket-sized books were inspired by our early days of connecting with readers and since then, it has grown into an extraordinary force. The One ‘n Done books can be read in one sitting or a long weekend and, with their portable size, are perfect for travel.
This summer, Read Furiously wants you to think about shifting your focus from bingeing online content to binge reading. What if you could design an entire summer TBR with books that travel well, offer a variety of voices, AND give you the accomplishment of a job well done?
Summer reading contains so many possibilities found in our longer days filled with activities, vacations, day trips, and lazy days at home. By focusing on reading as much as you can whenever you can, you’ll be building healthier habits that, unlike endless scrolling on our phones, will turn into health benefits even as the summer weather begins to fade.
Studies have shown that reading a traditional book before bed offers more benefits than falling asleep to your screen. For starters, reading a traditional book relaxes both mind and body, allowing you to follow your body’s circadian rhythm. Sleep quality and duration also improve when you make the choice to read before bed. However, like all great ideas, i’ts easier said than done. Burnout, stress, and the persisting horrors make it a challenge to turn your brain off and settle in to read. Enter portable reading.
If you keep a book on you at all times, you can retrain the muscle memory of reaching for your phone. No more doom scrolling which can be very dangerous to your health. Taking even five minutes to read can build a sustainable habit of reading every day. Portable books are designed to travel well and, with their shorter stories, give you the endorphin rush of accomplishment. Not bad for a book, huh?
