The Trilogy is Complete The idea for this series began seven years ago at the Trenton (now NJ) Punk Rock Flea Market. The day was long, but filled with excellent conversation between vendors and visitors. We were still a young publisher, trying to figure out where we fit within the great publishing landscape. We knew we wanted to publish one-of-a-kind stories filled with different perspectives and experiences. Being in that welcoming space while building a creative, meaningful journey became the catalyst for a series of books about the true nature of New Jersey. Not the ridiculous caricatures and jokes portrayed in television and film, but the true spirit of the state - the one we were experiencing that weekend in the old Roebling Wire Works.   We created our titles from significant attributes that we feel make up New Jersey. The World Takes, our first book, is an homage to the “Trenton Makes, the World Takes” bridge - a reminder of the dreams and hard work that so many generations have put into building New Jersey. The award-winning Stay Salty represents both the delicious salt water taffy from the Shore and the grit and determination of Garden State inhabitants. Finally, Disco Fries & Scenic Drives is a love letter to the diners that have nourished us and the drives that continue to inspire us.    This mighty trio represents our past, present, and our future as Read Furiously. Thanks for being along for the ride.

Alexa's Publishing Chat welcomes Samantha Atzeni Want to know how a publishing house comes together, Furious Readers? Back in March, Read Furiously was a sponsor for the Women in Publishing Summit and afterwards, Samantha Atzeni got to sit down with the Women in Publishing community’s fearless leader (and overall amazing person) Alexa.   Over the years, Alexa and the entire Women in Publishing community have encouraged us, inspired us, and taught us the necessary skills to help us succeed in the indie publishing industry. Being a sponsor for the WIP Summit brought our decade as a publishing house full circle and it was a privilege to share stories on Alexa’s Publishing Chat.   In the episode, “Building a Fierce Independent Press,” Samantha and Alexa discuss the joys and challenges of building an independent publishing house. Samantha Atzeni shares the origin story for Read Furiously, how the One ‘n Done series came about, why literary activism is a cornerstone to our value system, and the challenges that affect independent publishing on a daily basis.   If you were ever curious about the grit, spirit, and care that goes into indie publishing and small presses, you don’t want to miss this open and honest conversation between two expert professionals in the publishing industry. Many thanks to Alexa for having Samantha on the show.

Your Summer, Your Series: Author Spotlight - Melane Have you ever dreamed of escaping your life? Wondered what it might be like to find a new home overseas? Maybe you’ve done it. I used to imagine it. Then I found out that I qualified for a UK ancestry visa, and my heart decided to move. In 2017, I arrived in Edinburgh. Getting there was a whole process, involving everything from selling most of my possessions to navigating mountains of paperwork. I emerged in a context that blended culture shock and familiarity. I grew up as an immigrant. My American family moved to Prince Edward Island, Canada when I was a baby. I loved the place where I spent my formative years, but I always felt a sense of being “from away.” I suspect this feeling of displacement made it easier for me to go elsewhere. I lived in San Francisco for six years before moving to the UK, and I traveled a lot, including for university internships in the Northwest Territories and Bhutan. While living and working in the UK, I’ve gone from Edinburgh to London to Brighton. I’ve lived through the COVID-19 pandemic and upheavals in my personal life. I’ve acquired a new citizenship. This book touches on all of these experiences–from prior wandering to acclimation to the UK, from seeing pieces of a new life come together to feeling them fall apart. Wandering is in my family tree. I doubt this is my final destination. But wherever I may end up in the future, this experience has changed me. The poems and illustrations in this book are my attempt to show how. Learn more about Melanie Bell on her Author's Page And don't forget to include The Heart Decided to Move as part of the Your Summer, Your Series reading bundle.

Your Summer, Your Series: Author Spotlight - Nicole Zamlout Tales From The Scrapyard is, ultimately, a love letter to adaptation and storytelling. That is true of all of my works, but here especially. That desire to explore the moving parts that I love within the art of storytelling is what drove me throughout my writing process for this book and still drives my writing today. Stories want to grow and change just like we do, and Tales showcases just how powerful that call for change can be, no matter the genre. Learn more about Nicole and her work at her author page. And be sure to add Tales from the Scrapyard to your reading list with our Your Summer, Your Series reading bundle.

Your Summer, Your Series: Author Spotlight - Bill Hemmig Hi, I'm Bill Hemmig, author of One 'n Done #3 Breathren Hollow. It's a novella which is too long to be a short story, and too short to be a novel. People like to ask me what genre I write in, and for the longest time I didn't know how to respond, but Samantha and Adam - my publishers at Read Furiously call my work absurdist. At first, that didn't make any sense to me. My stories were about people you'd meet at the supermarket living their lives. But then I took a more detached look. Take Brethren Hollow for example. It's really just a critique of American X-Urbanism, but what gets the whole story started is when a group of neighbors in a new development discover something in the woods behind their houses that's well... absurd. And it sets all this stuff into motion that brings in elements of true crime, social satire, it gets kind of crazy. And then there are the people in my short story collection Americana. There's a man who developers an illness that has him hallucinating characters from children's books and hearing theme songs from 80s sitcoms. There's a real estate agent who converses with imaginary friends based on heroines from literature, there's a woman who can't stop planting her garden in strict geometric shapes. There's a guy who's mistaken for a deity, and another who thinks he is a deity. And I guess the truth of the matter is, I have an extremely absurd way of looking at the world, and I didn't realize cause thats how I've always looked at the world. I'm absurdist to others, I guess, and a realist to myself. Anyway, that's me. If you're interested, start with Brethren Hollow it won't take long to read and it's a gateway drug to the rest of the stuff. Learn more about Bill on his author page. And make sure to check out Brethren Hollow as part of the Your Summer, Your Series bundle.

Your Summer, Your Series: Author Spotlight - AJ Pellegrino I first came up with the idea for The Path Home in 2015. Its premise was different, it had no name, and I’m pretty sure I had planned on it being a short story; but at its core I always wanted to tell a story about two girls falling in love, the sometimes turbulent but loving relationship between a mother and daughter, and how magic interweaves humans and nature together. Over the years I've written Bryony and Iris' tale many different ways, but this was finally the one that felt right. I think every post grad can relate to the dread that sets in once you’re thrust into the real world, as well as the unnatural feeling of being back in your parent’s house after living on your own. What’s a haunted forest and a supernatural ex going to add? More stress? ~AJ Pellegrino Find out more about AJ Pellegrino's work on their author's page. And don't forget to make The Path Home part of your end of summer reading list with the Your Summer, Your Series bundle.
