How we get back into summer reading The summer solstice is a few days away, schools are wrapping up, libraries are offering more programming - every reader knows these are signs for one of the biggest reading events of the year: summer reading. It’s finally here, Furious Readers, and we have something really special planned. As Read Furiously celebrates its ten years, we’ve been spending some time thinking about the next ten years. Our publishing house was founded on the needs of our readers - readers who loved to read, but needed a sustainable reading experience. We want to continue this promise that we made ten years ago and so we introduce to you the first Read Furiously summer experience. Every summer will focus on an important reading technique necessary for a sustainable reading journey.  To begin this summer’s reading conversation, we wanted to focus on our bestselling, flagship series - the One ‘n Done series. Our specially designed pocket-sized books were inspired by our early days of connecting with readers and since then, it has grown into an extraordinary force. The One ‘n Done books can be read in one sitting or a long weekend and, with their portable size, are perfect for travel. This summer, Read Furiously wants you to think about shifting your focus from bingeing online content to binge reading. What if you could design an entire summer TBR with books that travel well, offer a variety of voices, AND give you the accomplishment of a job well done?  Summer reading contains so many possibilities found in our longer days filled with activities, vacations, day trips, and lazy days at home. By focusing on reading as much as you can whenever you can, you’ll be building healthier habits that, unlike endless scrolling on our phones, will turn into health benefits even as the summer weather begins to fade.  Studies have shown that reading a traditional book before bed offers more benefits than falling asleep to your screen. For starters, reading a traditional book relaxes both mind and body, allowing you to follow your body’s circadian rhythm. Sleep quality and duration also improve when you make the choice to read before bed. However, like all great ideas, i’ts easier said than done. Burnout, stress, and the persisting horrors make it a challenge to turn your brain off and settle in to read. Enter portable reading. If you keep a book on you at all times, you can retrain the muscle memory of reaching for your phone. No more doom scrolling which can be very dangerous to your health. Taking even five minutes to read can build a sustainable habit of reading every day. Portable books are designed to travel well and, with their shorter stories, give you the endorphin rush of accomplishment. Not bad for a book, huh? With our “Your Summer, Your Series” campaign, we’re giving you an opportunity to build your own summer TBR. Take the guesswork out of what to read next and fill your summer with pocket-sized books from a variety of genres. The more you buy, the more you save, offering you a chance to dive into the genres you love while taking a chance on a new one. Check out the “Your Summer, Your Series” bundle here.  We have a lot of great plans this summer and we hope you spend it with us. For now, let’s all read often, read well, and read furiously in the sunshine!

Let’s get ready for Independent Bookstore Day!   On the last Saturday in April, book people will go out into their communities to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day. For twelve years, Indie Bookstore Day has brought together over 1,600 bookstores throughout the country. It’s a wonderful day to advocate for the independent small businesses that work tirelessly to make our local areas more magical.  With so much to cover in a day, where do you start? Luckily we have a few planning tips for the big day: Make a plan. Having a plan is the best way to make sure you have a great Saturday. There will be tons of bookstores participating for Independent Bookstore Day, so we always suggest mapping out your day. Knowing which bookstores you plan to visit will help you figure out what time they open, what Independent Bookstore Day exclusives they’ll have, and what other places (i.e. main streets, coffee shops, lunch spots) are close by. Gather your crew. Shopping for books is always better with friends! You can all make a plan to cover your planned bookstores together or meet up at different points throughout the day. It’s a great way to spread the word and bring in more foot traffic for the indies.  Create your budget. For anyone who loves books, we all know that bookstore trips can turn expensive very fast. If you’re planning to go to multiple bookstores, have a budget for each one. If you go with friends, you can all get different books and plan a book swap for the summer. If you see more books than you can carry out of the store, then it sounds like your local independent bookstore will be seeing you again when your next paycheck comes in. The key isn’t to go broke on one day and never return. By becoming a patron at your local independent bookstore, you open yourself to book events, author meet and greets, book clubs, and amazing recommendations that only indie booksellers can give.  Make a wishlist. Indie bookstores contain the gift of discoverability. You never know what you’re going to find. However, sometimes it helps to have a few books on your list to avoid decision fatigue and analysis paralysis. Plus, having a wishlist turns your visit into a scavenger hunt!  Show your support. Can’t make it to every bookstore on your list or can’t afford it? There are other ways to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day (even for free!). Follow your favorite bookstores on social media and share or like their posts. Tell others about Independent Bookstore Day and encourage them to stop by. When you are able to purchase books, make a point to buy local. If you want to buy books this weekend, head over to Bookshop.org  which gives you an opportunity to financially support independent bookstores. Purchasing ebooks through Bookshop.org or audiobooks through Libro.fm are other ways to show your love for independent bookstores. When we shop indie and shop local, we all win.  Making time to lift up small businesses reminds us of how much the indie book industry relies on each other - now more than ever. We’ll see you at the bookstore, Furious Readers.
