“It’s my expectation that the Legislature (will) choose to either gavel in for a special session, or, at the first opportunity in January, override the governor’s line-item veto of the Base Student Allocation,” Jacobs said. “Our students are depending on them, and our community is watching.”

Today HB57, which contains a $700 BSA increase and reasonable policy measures overwhelmingly passed the Alaska Legislature.

I am grateful to the 48 leaders who put politics aside to take the first step in what must be a multi-year process to adequately support our students, families and educators.

This weekend I joined my colleague Margo Bellamy at the Association of Alaska School Boards Spring Academy. I appreciated the deep-dive on Alaska’s Tribal Consultation process, and used the opportunity to create action items aimed at integrating aspects of the process within district operations.

Huge turnout across Anchorage at rallies and town hall events as our Legislative Delegation returned home for the weekend. Support for education funding via HB69 and a sustainable fiscal plan was incredible. Thank you to every student, parent, educator and resident who made time to engage! #redfored

ASD says it wants to ‘transform’ school lunch experience with new program The Anchorage School District is looking to transform how it serves school lunches in part by offering more items made from scratch.

Exciting news from the awesome ASD student nutrition team. 75% of student meals could be made from scratch within the next 5 years. 🥗

I appreciate the collaboration and advocacy of our Assembly colleagues. Today’s action will help ASD quickly allocate new resources to retain educators and reverse cuts to programs as soon as they are made available by the Alaska Legislature.

Today at a special meeting the Anchorage Assembly overwhelmingly approved AO 2025-29(S): ASD’s 2025-2026 operating budget. The (S) version added new language which pre-approves utilization of additional state revenue, such as the $1,000 BSA increase contained in HB69, once the bill becomes law.

ICYMI: Shortly before HB69 passed the Alaska House with bipartisan support, Rep. Josephson made the case for an increased BSA to avoid harmful programs cuts and increased class sizes. The Bill is now being heard by Senate Education. Please send an email of support to: Senate.Education@akleg.gov.

The House has passed HB 69 on a vote of 24-16 to increase the BSA by $1,000 per student. The bill now moves to the Senate. Thanks to House members for taking this step to support Alaska students and ensure our schools have the resources they need. #akleg

Appreciate the ADN for covering a budget amendment I drafted in collaboration with my colleague Kelly Lessens. If approved, the amendment could reverse the vast majority of harmful classroom instruction cuts being considered, pending additional funding being allocated by #akleg.

Deeply grateful for the impassioned and fact-based remarks from Rep. Gray, and many of his colleagues today on the House floor. Our students, families and educators deserve leaders willing to cast aside hollow, tired partisan talking points, and support our public schools.

Listening to Alaska’s students provide inspiring testimony to legislators on the importance funding their schools, while catching glimpses of today’s epic sunrise was a perfect way to kick off this week. Well done, all!

It is past time for our elected leaders in state government to implement a sustainable long-term fiscal plan, the catalyst necessary to reverse net out-migration and facilitate adequate investment in our schools.

Anchorage School District aims to pilot program providing affordable child care The district hopes to use excess space in elementary schools to pilot the program as soon as next fall, to both attract new employees and address a community-wide child care crisis, officials say.

While the Board’s attention remains focused on the final phase of Superintendent Bryantt’s Rightsizing initiative, I remain excited and optimistic about leveraging additional excess capacity within our schools to address the lack of affordable childcare.
