New tenants union launches in Bemidji to help renters negotiate prices, get maintenance The group’s formation was announced at a recent City Council meeting. Fifty-eight percent of residents in Bemidji are renters.

I did some research for @homelinemn.org a few years back and found that 26 states allow tenants to make repairs and deduct those amounts from their rent, to some extent or another. Minnesota does not. A huge hole in our laws, especially when some cities do not meaningfully enforce their city codes

Eviction filings surged at the start of 2025 to levels not seen in some Minnesota communities since before the pandemic, leaving housing advocates scrambling to keep people in their homes.
