Alexandria was my favorite Egyptian city. I walked the whole way from the ancient Mamluk castle to the spot where the lighthouse once stood. And I wandered the alleys too.

She gave me a hug, and said "American" in a voice full of awe. I think about that woman sometimes. What she and her country endured, and the freedom my country symbolized to her.

And today in a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump ended any idea that Anerica stands for freedom.

In 2019 I took the train across Russia. I was in the Kazan station, looking at the board where the track numbers are posted, when a woman who looked to be in her late seventies asked me something in Russian. I stammered something like "American." She asked someone else, then turned to me again.
