McSweeney hits the nail on the head again! 😂

Just one of many creative ideas proposed to recruit students to History classes: Feed instructor with lowest student evaluations to lions in Roman-style
spectacle that brings history to life! 🦁

Seriously. Most podcasts/articles are about how horrible menopause is. I also appreciate the Wiser Than Me podcast for interviewing post-menopausal women who, shockingly!, are still living full, rich, rewarding lives.

Three very bright ribbons of green light swirl in the night sky over a round yurt surrounded by a wooden deck. The silhouetted spires of spruce trees rise up around the snow-covered yurt and stand against the bright green lights.

Each night of our aurora tours in Churchill is spent in a different location. This yurt just inside the treeline is one of my favourite places. We had a spectacular show there the other night. #aurora #northernlights

That would be diabolical, and sadly effective for me

There are a couple kestrels near my house and I love them so much, all that hunting fury in a gorgeous bird the size of a pop can. And that tail!

Basically, take the amount of money you think your favorite author gets, halve it, and then halve it again, and you have a number that's probably a lot closer to their actual earnings from writing.

"But I don't think they make that much!"

Halve that. Halve it again.

For #InternationalWomensDay I’m sharing my ongoing series of women in science through history. I’m now at 79.

Here’s to the day a scientist’s sex is no longer remarkable in any field.

Since last year I have added these 12 #linocut prints.

Press release from my consulting firm reading: I am aware of the recent trend of CEOs eating their company’s product and posting the video on social media.
I love social media trends, but as the CEO of a conservation policy consulting firm focusing on protecting endangered species of sharks, I will not be participating in this trend at this time.
Thanks,
The Management

Burning fossil fuels for energy is a bad idea. Setting fossil fuels on fire for no economic benefit or marginal utility is total bullshit.

Another fun thing I learned yesterday is that global vegetable oil prices and crude oil prices are themselves much more correlated than they used to be due to 21st century biofuel policies

A book cover with the title “Children of Owl” and a girl looking up at a mountain with an owl boy prominent in the background.

CHILDREN OF OWL HAS A COVER!!!! With art by Abigail Rajunov, who also illustrated 25 pages of comics in the book. It was an honor to work with her; I couldn’t be happier!! 🥹💕

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
