A silhouette of the USS Pegasus, a hydrofoil designed for speed and mobility. Official records indicate that this U.S. Navy vessel was decommissioned in 1993. Evelyn is aware, however, of chatter on certain BBS forums and hacker IRC channels that offer up highly detailed refutations of the ship’s final years. The Pegasus was not decommissioned and conveniently sold for scrap, as the official story goes. Rather, the ship disappeared, without a trace, one March night in 1991 in the waters off Key West. According to this theory, which Evelyn finds compelling despite herself, no bodies were ever recovered and no debris was ever found. The Pegasus was simply gone.

NOSE - While the original design of the head is variable in its design (especially around the faceplate, which could either have a flat top or a jagged top), a good amount of the illustrations show that the red section under the eyes was intended to be in the shape of a nose and upper cheeks. This is similar to other giant robots of the era, like Mazinger Z or Zambot 3. VENTS - Some depictions of the RX-78-2 have extruded yellow frames around the chest vents instead of vents directly inset in the chest. While this is a design trait that the later RX-178 Gundam Mk-II has featured since its first appearance, the RX-78-2 wouldn't be depicted with them until its first Master Grade model kit in 1995. Now, this look is part of the variable design "canon", and appears on some iterations of the RX-78-2 like the Ver. Ka or the Gundam: The Origin design. YELLOW V-FIN/ANTENNA - The RX-78-2 is occasionally depicted with the crest on its head in yellow instead of white, especially in early merchandise of the show. This may have been because early giant robot toys used softer, rubbery material for pointy design elements, and that material only came in a yellow color. On the RX-78-2, this yellow coloration is also used in the Gundam: The Origin manga, alongside a green camera at the top of the head and eyes that often glow pink. (alt text continued in next post)

A three-quarters profile of the U.S. Navy’s F-14 Tomcat, the supersonic fighter jet that played a starring role in Top Gun. Pilot Rock Stone prepares for takeoff, while RIO Mason Smith runs diagnostics on the radar and weapons systems. While both men are canny aces in the sky, neither have much of what you would call curiosity about the world. For instance, neither have considered even for a moment the ridiculousness of their names. Or thought about how they’re paired together, completely unaware of the joke their CO is playing on them. The CO will feel bad when the mission fails and both men will presumably have to be identified by their dental work. The CO will feel doubly bad when the Navy forensics team discovers that Stone and Smith’s teeth are nowhere to be found at the crash site. Where the experts expect the teeth to be they find only a bizarrely undamaged robin’s egg blue envelope. Inside the envelope is a note that says, “Thank you for the gift. We ❤️️ you.”

If this helicopter on the ground with marines pouring out looks hand-drawn, that’s because it is. Lt. Furness won’t speak, won’t look the doctors or nurses in the eye, refuses to do anything except draw this helicopter and these marines. Day after day, Furness draws slight variations of the scene, hundreds of them. It’s the psychologist on staff who realizes that Furness isn’t drawing the same scene again and again. It’s a sequence. And when you pile them all together and riffle through them, flip book style, a chilling animation emerges. The marines stream out of the copter, its blades still rotating, and one after another each marine staggers to their knees and pitches forward, as if gagging. Tiny dots fly from their mouths. The psychologist thinks it’s vomit. It is not. The dots are teeth.
