@drewcreasman.bsky.social @iracreasman.bsky.social, I just want you to know that while playing FF Tactics last night, I instinctively responded out loud to a monologue with โ€œno problem, Mustadioโ€.

Your work here is done.

In Final Fantasy Tactics, Ramza fights the demon Belias, associated with the Aries (Ram) Stone and who calls himself the Devil. โ€˜Belias/Belialโ€™ is a term used in the Hebrew Bible to sometimes mean โ€˜wickednessโ€™, which Christians personify as Satan, who is said to have ramโ€™s horns.

One of the most critical and beloved moments of FFVII is when Cloud remembers his friend Zack, leading to the blond hero reforging his own identity. Zackโ€™s name derives from Zechariah, itself of Hebrew origin, and means โ€œGod remembersโ€, which reflects the characterโ€™s role.

The Einherjar - also called the Black Galleon - is one of the greatest ships ever built, used to transport Odin and his Royal Army elite in Final Fantasy XVI. In Norse myth, the Einherjar are Odin's army in the afterlife, comprised of the greatest Viking warriors to ever live.

The first conflict to arise in Greek mythology was Uranus (Sky) forcing himself upon Gaea (Earth), with effects that would be felt for eons. This is reflected in Jenovaโ€™s meteorite striking the Planet at Gaeaโ€™s Cliff, still affecting Final Fantasy VIIโ€™s plot 2,000 years later.

Most mythographers agree the earliest phoenix tales in Greek literature derive from the Bennu bird, a creature in Egyptian creation myths that lands on the first mound of the black, primordial waters. This is why the resurrected hideaway in FFXVI is located in Bennumere.

In Norse myth, the gods bind the giant wolf Fenrir to an island because heโ€™s fated to bring destruction. Fenrir is also the name of Cloudโ€™s motorcycle and his accessoriesโ€™ wolf motif in Advent Children. They symbolise Cloud being constrained by dwelling on his tragic past.

Most commonly depicted with three heads, Cerberus is the fearsome hellhound that guards the gates to the underworld in classical mythology. In FFVIIโ€™s Dirge of Cerberus, Vincent uses this triple-barrelled, hound-decorated rifle to fight his way into the depths of Deepground.

The stolases of Final Fantasy XVI are owl-like messengers capable of transmitting the thoughts of others via their glowing โ€˜third eyeโ€™. Stolas is a Prince of Hell in demonology, also known as the Owl Demon. In his humanoid form, he has white wings and bright blue-green eyes.

Tifaโ€™s endgame weapons in FFVII Rebirth are the Jรกrngreipr, meaning โ€œIron Grippersโ€ in Old Norse. Theyโ€™re named after the gloves of Thor, the Norse god of storms. This may explain why the Jรกrngreipr are found in the ToAโ€™s Corridor of Currents, amid the Lifestream tempest.

In Celtic folklore, it was sometimes claimed a cat sรฏth (pl. cait sith) was a witch who could shapeshift into a black cat. They were able to do this up to 9 times. In FFVII, Reeve operates Cait Sith robots by supernatural means, with at least 5 appearing in the Compilation.

Minotaurs are a bovine race of beastmen in Final Fantasy XVI, with named figures such as Asterios, the white-furred brute who is fought at the Sagespire. In Greek myth, there is only one Minotaur - his real name is Asterion/Asterios and he was fathered by a sacred white bull.

In many Far Eastern cultures, water dragons symbolise power, representing anything from life-giving rivers to destructive typhoons. Final Fantasy VII's Wutai reflects this by adopting the water serpent Leviathan as its patron, albeit Leviathan itself is not an Eastern concept.

In the legends of King Arthur, his knights gather at the Round Table. Arthur is associated with Avalon, a mystical island of fruit trees, where he is entombed. This is why Final Fantasy VIIโ€™s Knights of the Round materia is found on the forested Round Island, hidden at sea.

Shiva plays a crucial role in the narrative of FFXVI's expansion The Rising Tide. Its guest character is Shula, a leader and warrior who wields a battle-axe. In Hindu iconography, Lord Shiva is sometimes shown holding an axe or more generally a trident known as the 'Trishula'.

In Greek and Egyptian lore, the phoenix was an immortal bird that was reborn from the remains of its last incarnation. The Phoenix Materia is obtained in FFVII by winning the Fort Condor battle, which simultaneously causes the giant bird to die and its chick to hatch.

FFVII Rebirthโ€™s famed weaponsmith is Izo, who sends the group in search of Draconite Ore so that he can forge the Fafnir Rifle for Barret. In the Norse legends, Fafnir is a dragon slain by the hero Sigurd, who is sent by Fafnirโ€™s brother - the skilled dwarf weaponsmith, Regin.

The two-headed Typhon and octopus-like Ultros are recurring fiends in the Final Fantasy series, with the latter also called Orthros. In Greek myth, Typhon is a serpent-limbed monster and Orthros is a two-headed dog, suggesting their names were mixed up in FFVIโ€™s development.

In Viking culture, berserkers were shaman-warriors who were unnaturally strong and uncontrollably violent when in a furious trance - the act of going berserk. In Final Fantasy VII, Vincentโ€™s limit breaks do the same thing - the Galian Beast even uses the move Berserk Dance.

In FFXVI, Clive can buy drinks for himself - or even a round for the whole hall - at the hideaway's Tub & Crown from the barkeeper, Maeve. The girl's name is an anglicisation of Medb, a figure in the Ulster Cycle of Irish myth, which can be translated as โ€˜she who intoxicatesโ€™.

In medieval demonology, Eligor was a Grand Duke of Hell who was often depicted as a cloaked spectre riding a semi-skeletal horse and wielding a lance. FF7 Remake adapted the enemy from the OG to more closely match this description, while his rule over the ghosts links to Hell.
