I *really* don't want to be a downer but to me the precursor to Doing is Saying, and not nearly enough of this Party is saying what needs to be said. About punishing the villains, about abolishing billionaires, about ending elite impunity. Too many want to leave the rot but change the branding

In Praise of Del the Funky Homosapien A primer on one of the greatest underground rappers ever

I wrote a career retrospective on @delhiero.bsky.social in light of his return to the limelight at SNL over the weekend, including a playlist and my observations from performing with him twice over the years 👽

One of the famous altissimo books says up front that it doesn't try to explain the physical aspect at all because it has to be learned by feel, which sounds about right, it mostly just lays out overtone exercises that in theory should get you closer

How To Play Altissimo High Notes On Sax - THE ULTIMATE LESSON YouTube video by Get Your Sax Together

Common explanation by players is "raise the back of the tongue like you're making an E vowel sound or hissing", but scientists saw a low tongue, constricted glottis, high/ domed soft palate. This video is fascinating but has maybe also cost me what little altissimo I had:

in my kayaking days there was a waterfall where you had to aim at a rock just past the lip... if you actually hit it you'd likely go over the edge sideways and maybe drown but trying to hit it was the only way get far enough left not to break your ankles. had to try to do it wrong to do it right.

Now I'm trying to do what the scientists have proved empirically is the thing going on in the altissimo player's vocal tract and I sound even worse.

A wrinkle in my quest to master altissimo/ pitch bending/ voicing stuff on sax is that there have apparently been pretty convincing scientific studies with X rays and such proving that what pro sax players say they are doing to control the upper register is not actually what they are doing

It’s crucial that no Democrat who supports this in any way can be allowed to survive their next primary. We let the Iraq war boosters off the hook and look where we are now. We must start imposing consequences for going along with this shit

Been working on Voicing exercises and the suspicion dawns that what little ability I have attained over thirty years in the overtone and altissimo departments is an illusory artifact of Biting rather than the true path of Throat Stuff

INTERFERENCE PATTERN, by ELUCID 1 track album

Completely missed this one, wish I had caught it while there were tapes left. Elucid letting his noise freak flag fly, I liked his last couple solo outings a lot but this might really be his place of power

INTERFERENCE PATTERN, by ELUCID 1 track album

This is fully not from the last month but it dropped December 30th and I missed it so maybe you did too, Elucid (from Armand Hammer) dropped something that's more noise tape than hip hop and it's excellent elucid.bandcamp.com/album/interf...

Dipping into late January but would also recommend both "As of Now" by Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon (think motormouthed Southern rapper on the sort of beats they usually give MIKE or Earl) and "Kilter" by Tinned Meats (sound sort of like "Beat" era King Crimson with a little Gang of Four in there).
