Scientists look for cause of spike in swimmer’s itch plaguing Minnesota lakes The itchy red rash is caused by tiny parasites in the water that can burrow into human skin. Researchers are looking at whether certain waterfowl, invasive species or warming lakes could be factors.

It was a bittersweet farewell to UNDERC this week as I finished the final field season of my PhD. I’m grateful for the science I got to do as part of the Cascade Project and the wonderful people I’ve gotten to work with. I’m excited to see what comes next! @ndfieldecology.bsky.social

Scientists stunned by 'remarkable' reappearance of species thought to be extinct: 'One of the most historic comebacks ever' Thanks to successful conservation efforts, the leaf-toed gecko was found alive on the Galapagos Islands for the first time in centuries.

"We conducted extensive monitoring prior to the removal of invasive rats and they weren't detected at all. We believe a small population held on all those years and then, without invasive predators, it finally had the opportunity to recover & grow its population."

ID Help: This specimen was found in a stormwater management pond (SWMP) in Ontario. It was found at 1-m depth, but given the dynamic water-levels of SWMPs, it could be an emergent plant rather than a submergent (which is what we are focused on). TIA for ID help. Cc @jolatimore.bsky.social

My #MacrophyteMonday plant is coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum)! This aquatic plant is a common and beneficial part of #Michigan #lake communities. It is sometimes confused with invasive Eurasian milfoil, but is easily distinguished (1/n).
