Possible. Somehow more depressing (though less morally reprehensible) is the possibility that Anglican factionalism has just reached such a state that decision-making is now nigh impossible.

More democratic and decentralised than whom? My comparisons here are all within the CofE: Carey, Williams, Welby.

There was a month or so between Carey and Williams; nearly 3 between Williams and Welby; it looks to be at least a 10-month vacancy this time. I’m gonna try not to extrapolate…

What I want for Christmas is for politicians to stop scapegoating immigrants for the UK’s inability to build and maintain infrastructure, while also desperately needing foreign labour to prop the same infrastructure up. It is disingenuous and ugly.

St Catherine of Siena Churchyard Appeal 2025 – Under the Downs

I’m going to put this out on #AnglicanBlueSky or indeed just church-friendly Bluesky: a tree fell in our churchyard, which nearly crushed it. The bill for its removal is a big chunk of our annual budget. So, we’re raising funds to help us defray costs! underthedowns.co.uk/cockingchurc...

Sim Kwangyang died 10 years ago today. He was my 干爹, a sort of secular godfather. Among the things he introduced to me were the word "theist", philosophy as an academic subject, and the Lord of the Rings. I owe him a lot, and am sorry not to be back in Malaysia to pay my respects there.

It’s Charles Schultz’s birthday today. He would’ve been 102. My mother learnt to read English by reading Peanuts comics. I’ll forget be grateful for that.

We need to talk about race and assisted dying Chine McDonald looks at assisted dying and the underrepresented (and different) perspective of black people. 26/11/2024

"As we approach the vote on assisted dying this week, I’ve been struck by how arguments in favour have held to very white, Western concepts of what it is to be human."

Got a few things off my chest about race and #AssistedDying

A Rectory in the snow. A snow-covered church. A tree surrounded by snow. A small snowman with almonds for eyes and a carrot for a nose.

A snowy day in beautiful West Sussex.

The problem with binge-reading the @newyorker.com.web.brid.gy, say, once a month is that I’m only now reading the early November issues, and bloody hell, it’s depressing on this side of the election.

Does someone have a list of honorary cathedral canons appointed in 2024, and--in particular--how White this year's slate is (or isn't, he says, optimistically)?

For those among you who have access to the FT, @chinemcdonald.bsky.social wrote a very good piece for yesterday’s edition. For those of you who don’t, DM me…

I might eventually have to replace this copy, having turned its pages so very often. I don’t ever get tired of reading it to the kids, even repeatedly each night. Now there’s an endorsement.

Somehow when I tell myself that I spend my mornings “dealing with correspondence”, I feel a bit better than when I think of it as “doing emails”.

Hi everyone! For context, I started by looking up the philosophy, psychology, and Anglican lists when I signed up.
