When I first saw this piece it I didn't understand 'why physics'. Now I do. Aside from the workshop/maker link, as an experimental physicist who places materials under compression to explore what happens, I actually feel quite connected to this complex orange 'rectangle'. 🧵 6/6

Levy is inspired by a vice - a common tool workshops. The work exhibits the forces of compression on the bent planes and reflects Hopmeier’s interest in machines and tools. Given physics ANU houses a strong workshop team of creative makers, I am glad the sculpture is with us now. 🧵3/6

Levy has deep roots at ANU. For 32 years, from 1982 to 2014, Levy stood outside Chifley Library. Then, after a brief stay in the CBE building it moved in 2017 to the Drill Hall Gallery where was on permanent display. 🧵 2/6

The lack of light created the hue and the stairs provided the zig zag view.

The unmistakable 'creaky door' call made me look from my desk - and here is the culprit! Gang-gangs have such a distinctive sound, like an old door hinge that needs oiling. Love spotting these beautiful little grey cockatoos with their punk rock crests. So Canberra. Made my morning. #birdnerd
