Yes, it is. None of the films capture the texture of the novel. Matheson wrote some great TV too - Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and some good Hammer Horror screenplays.

My dad gave me that Corgi edition when I was about 10, which is a bit too young to read it, to be honest. Some modern readers may find it a bit slow, but it hits hard once you commit to it. George Remero was a big fan. It's likely the seminal work for all zombie apocalypse fiction.
