Close-up of the head and shoulders of a common grackle in profile. He has an iridescent purple head with bronze shoulders. He has a light yellow eye and a matte black beak which curves slightly downward. Background is a monochromatic tan.

For the other #BirdoftheDay theme of #HeadShots, I’m going with this common grackle from Central Park, 3/30/24 in #NYC. #Birds #Nature

In a seaside landscape, a skeletal figure tugs at a man in oilskins as they stand in the water, just off the beach. Gray, stormy clouds in the sky, and a tower or lighthouse stands in the distance.

This is a good lesson for journalists: Use plain language to state true things clearly.

I legit see it as a small instance of doing my part to preserve the spirit of the old, weird, less corporate internet when I post comics and essays and shit to my own personal website, the way we all used to

As someone who went on the Internet for the first time in the early 90’s, I fucking loved the Internet. It has given so many things in life, and afforded me so many incredible experiences.

And to see it, and technology in general where they are today is kinda soul crushing.

I'm best known for making fun of Cabbage Patch Dolls on VH1 and I knew they were going to fucking close the strait.

This Great Blue Heron took a break from fishing in a small pond (where the heron was catching tiny fish) to perch in an Eastern Red Cedar.

EVERY SINGLE PART of a lily is toxic!

Petals, leaves, pollen, the water in the vase.

You can celebrate someone other ways besides killing their cat.

I worked as a vet tech for 10 years. Let me assure you, you don't want to see your cat go through this nightmare.

Another new free Arkham Horror story from me, featuring a creepy boss that is not at all inspired by an actual creepy boss; why do you ask? Give it a download and get ready for the Chapter Two Core Set. There are a few tiny little hints sprinkled throughout these stories...

A muskrat slurps up a pillar of fibrous algae from the edge of a swamp. It is simultaneously gorgeous and gross.

If you would like to be reassured it’s not all horror 24/7, let me introduce you to this muskrat happily slurping up swamp goo down by the border. It’s stretchy, not sketchy, and couldn’t be fresher. Swamp-to-cakehole cuisine, carefree living, this muskrat has it made.

Just doing a little math on the difference in royalties I receive on adult books vs kids books and hardcover vs paperback:
50,000 copies of an adult novel in HC
=
1,500,000 copies of a children's illustrated chapter book in PB
Blows my mind. 50k vs 1.5M

Fun with sounds & words! 😉🐶🐱🐮

rough (like what a dog says, "RUFF!")
cough (like a cat who pushes something OFF a table)
drought (like when you get a boo-boo & say "OW!")
though (like the complete sentence: NO.)
thought (like you AUGHT to have THOUGHT of that)
through (like what a cow says, "MOO!")

Signs of Spring We’ve been having some extra warm weather this week, and I’m happy to report that the snow has ALL melted. On Monday we took a walk through a somewhat soggy backyard and saw the creek flowing extra…

What’s absurd is that it isn’t even a special image. Stock photo sites are full of actual photos of people sitting in coffee shops.

This is also why engaging with comments is pointless, as is pretending that "outrage" as measured in comments is a useful metric. Yet all of the algorithms are still designed to measure engagement this way, and using these signals to serve you (mis) information.
