That's what I thought! But it turns out everyone i know play by making consistent save files so they never have to go back more than like an hour - they just replay until they get the outcomes they want in as few playthroughs as possible. I play this way so I can have more playthroughs later

most games just take you back to the previous checkpoint, so i don't see a point in making a bunch of save files, i save over the same one. When I accidentally got all the tieflings killed in BG3 and saw that I'd have to go back 6 hours, I just shrugged, said, "Consequences," and moved on

Minimal usage of guides, as few save files as possible, and if i fuck something up i just keep it pushing
