I'm a linguist & sr lecturer at Metropolia Uni. I'm writing my PhD in marketing and linguistics at the University of Helsinki. I like #language & #linguistics, hockey, baseball and comic books - but maybe not in that order :) https://eviljoemcveigh.com

16.08.2025 16:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks! I added a quick line with my name and link to my website. It didn't even occur to me to do that because it's a policy that I give my students so obviously it comes from me π But feel free to share and adapt to suit your needs! If I update it, the link will stay the same.
16.08.2025 06:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There's a whole lot of academic papers in there, just saying

Start a conversation with the student and give my reasoning. It's a chance to remind them of ethical practices in academia. There's also usually problems with the text to discuss - such as straight plagiarism, irrelevant passages or made up sources - that mean the work can't get a passing grade.
13.08.2025 18:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The rest of Will's opinion piece is profoundly stupid. But at least it is not dangerous. None of it should not have been published, but least of all this harmful rhetoric.
11.08.2025 09:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A section from George Will's recent language peeving column in which he approvingly equates language pet peeves with homophobia. He writes "Most Americans sailed through grade school without the benefit of what some pupils can enjoy in third grade these days: classroom discussions about gender fluidity. Now Americans who want to be journalistically literate must master the taxonomy of the various vibes."
George Will recently wrote a screed complaining about language (which is nothing new). But in it he equates language peeving with homophobia. This is dangerous. By linking these two things together, he is saying that it is fine to dislike words and to dislike queer people. This will harm people.
11.08.2025 09:22 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0In Finland, people yell "Play Paranoid!" instead of "Play Free Bird!"
Metal is kind of a big deal here.
I'm going to see a Black Sabbath cover band in Helsinki tonight so now I can yell "Soita Paranoid!" and they're definitely gonna play it π€π

08.08.2025 19:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thank you for saying so! I hope it helps. I understand students who think like that. I try to show them that the learning part is the whole point. The assignments are just the very last stage in that process.

And ICE CREAM MAN is a great anthology (the issues are loosely connected). And TRVE CVLT by Wilson and Kangas is really great fun(ny) horror.

The NIHβs 2024 budget of just under $37B generated $95B in economic activity in 2024 alone. 99.4% of new pharmaceuticals approved from 2010-2019 came from NIH-funded research. Iβm hard pressed to think of anything that generates as much direct economic benefit as our NIH did before they destroyed it

Here's Supes saying "yon". For what it's worth, this was published 50 years after the OED most recent citation.

Chatterton is a beneficiary of what I call placeholder writing. Folks like Nikole Hannah-Jones & Ta-Nehisi earned a following & then started talking about reparations & the 1619 project. And those pieces were popular, shifting the conversation in their favor. 1/
