Bye Bye Snow...
With a sustained warm up on the way, coupled with showers, drizzle and fog patches, models project our current 20 to 50 cm snowpack will be almost entirely wiped out by late next week for much of the Maritimes!
Here is the ECWMF model for snow depth for today and a week from now.
Here are the 3 month (D-J-F) winter period maps of snowfall and relative-to-normal snowfall:
=February Summary=
The big headline is (again) below average precip for NB + NW NS. Not good for ongoing drought situation in these areas.
-9th consecutive month with below average precip for NB
-Driest February on record: Fredericton, Woodstock & Truro.
-2nd driest winter season for Fredericton.
Updated outlook for the incoming snow.
Not significant, but certainly a disruptive snowfall for Wednesday morning with delays and possibly some cancellations.

Plenty of signs of Spring in the long range forecast... but not before some more shoveling.
Incoming system will bring snow for Tuesday night into Wednesday.

What a view!
Big blue skies allowed NASA's MODIS satellite to take an awesome shot of the Maritimes today.
Lots of snow... and yes sea ice. Sea ice coverage in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is currently running around 20%. The 1990-2020 average is closer to 35-40% this time of year.
Here's a look at some snowfall totals from across the Maritimes, via our volunteer observers.
Many observers noted that measurements were difficult to make due to the blowing and drifting snow.

A lifetime look at the impactful nor'easter that pounded the northeastern U.S.
Monday Eve Update
Snow & blowing snow continues...
Would recommend shoveling before bed along Atlantic coast + central & east NS, as snow mixes to rain this eve-tonight.

Updated Snowfall Map & Warnings
The headlines with this storm will be the heavy snowfall rates Monday afternoon/evening coupled with the winds gusting 60 to 90 km/h leading to blowing and drifting snow. The snow will be heavy and wet leading to an increased risk of power outages.

=Nor'easter to bring snow & strong winds for Monday=
Our latest Nor’easter will bring significant snowfall & gusty winds which will likely lead to travel delays, cancellations and also bring the risk for power outages.

Some preliminary snowfall totals across the Maritimes from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning.
Additional snowfall of 5-10 cm possible along the Northumberland Shore today and right into Friday morning for northern Cape Breton. More on that on CBC radio and TV this afternoon/evening.
#halisky
Well that was a first... and right on cue!😆
Clearly, there is a risk of some power outages tonight as the snow continues!
Snow tapers to flurries by Thursday morning for many, however continues in the east

Prepare for delays Wed–Thu as an Alberta clipper brings more snow. NS: 10–20 cm (highest along the Atlantic coast, Northumberland Shore & Cape Breton).
Heavy, wet snow near 0°C = greasy roads, possible outages.

More snow on the way!
An Alberta Clipper brings shovelable snow mid-week.
Snow spreads in west to east Wednesday with a slow/snowy afternoon-evening commute. Snow tapers overnight for most, lingers into Thursday in the east.
10–20 cm for Nova Scotia with 5–10 cm, southern NB.
Stay tuned.

Great view of the Maritimes and Gulf of St. Lawrence today!
The ice coverage in the Gulf is noteworthy, as it's estimated to be near 23%.
While that is still shy of the 30 year normal, this is the highest ice coverage in the Gulf (at this point of the season) since 2020.
Welcome to Solar Spring! ☀️
Solar winter, which is the darkest 3 month period of the year is now behind us! Our sun angle is now up to ~30° above the horizon and climbing quickly.
Right now our daylength is about 10 hours and we are gaining about 2 minutes and 40 seconds of light per day!
#halisky
Another interesting tidbit.
Halifax-Shearwater stayed below the freezing mark for 10 consecutive days from January 24th through February 2nd and that's the longest stretch below zero for the city since January of 2007!!!
(February 2015, had one day that jumped above zero)
#halisky #nswx #nbwx
I did some digging into the 10 day stretch from January 23rd-February 1st and it was impressively cold.
In fact, it was the coldest 10 day stretch since that infamous winter of 2015 across most of Nova Scotia and PEI and the coldest 10 day stretch in a few years elsewhere.

=January 2026 Recap=
It may be hard to believe, but January finished near to slight above average for most of the region.
The month was full of storms and temperature swings - starting cold, before turning really mild and then finishing with another Arctic airmass.
And on that note...
=Storm Totals for Sunday night-Monday night.=
Incredible gradient in Halifax area thanks to the intense snow band that set up over SE Halifax county on Sunday night.
Generally, the heaviest amounts fell across the eastern shore and into Cape Breton, closest to the storm track.

Do you remember the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976?
One of the strongest storms on record to hit the Maritimes rolled in 50 years ago today.
The storm brought hurricane force winds and a storm surge that caused widespread damage.
Here's a look back at the storm.

Sunday Nor’easter Update:
Cape Breton & the Northumberland Shore face heavy snow (20–30+ cm), whiteouts, and gusts 70–80+ km/h.
Tough forecast for Halifax and up the 102 to Truro, in the sharp gradient zone (10–20 cm). Snow tapers in northwest

Updated Forecast for Nova Scotia Nor'easter.
Guidance is shifting east with the track of the storm, bringing heaviest snowfall to eastern areas & Cape Breton.
Despite the shift, still expecting very gusty winds with blowing and drifting snow.

Some uncertainty remains with the Sunday–Monday storm. Canadian models trend offshore, U.S. guidance wobbles, while the European model has been most consistent—and snowiest—for the Maritimes.
A significant snowfall still looks increasingly likely for much of NS. Stay tuned.
#halisky #nsstorm
Lots of buzz about yet another Sunday into Monday storm.
And yes, while it's still a long way out, it's looking more and more likely that parts of the Maritimes may be digging out again early next week.
Here's what we know... and what we don't know.
#nsstorm #nbstorm #halisky
Totals Map - Sunday Eve to Tuesday AM
No big surprises, just a lot of shoveling, especially northern Nova Scotia where some picked up nearly 40 cm of fresh snow!
Blowing and drifting has been a big issue and will continue to be a factor into Wednesday, especially for open and exposed areas.
#halisky
Snow continues tonight, then tapers to flurries from west to east thru Tuesday morning & early afternoon.
Winds remain gusty so blowing/drifting snow will continue.
