Exactly right. Texas has been running this playbook for decades — no income tax, education funded through property taxes, burden falls regressively. Property taxes in Texas are among the highest in the US as a direct result. Alberta is just further behind on the same trajectory.

Alberta Budget 2026 didn't raise taxes. It just raised your property taxes — the one tool the province left municipalities, then spent years criticizing them for using. Wrote about it.

City administration shows other impacts the provincial budget is anticipated to have on Calgary.

Affordable housing, and an increase to the grants the province pays in lieu of property taxes. There's also funding for "partner infrastructure" like schools, post-secondaries.

Here's a look at what the City of Calgary included in its budget submission to the provincial government last year, and what was included in the province's budget tabled last week.

(It would cost us some $$$, I guess.)

I am unsure what this would do. Or what the question could even be, when #yyc is required to collect this tax on behalf of the provincial government as per the Municipal Government Act. Municipalities in Alberta exist at the whim of provincial legislation. #yyccc

I think both C/Kourtneys from the last #yyccc were in that class too heh
