It makes you wonder how many UCP MLAs have written LMIA waiver support letters for Alberta businesses. #ableg

Also, did you know that businesses will often apply for Labour Market Impact Assessment (the proof that there aren’t Canadian workers who can fill these roles) waivers and will contact politicians to write letters of support for these waivers? Often businesses you wouldn’t expect to use TFWs πŸ‘€

This was a great ep and sent me back to my rage over the working conditions at the Brooks Cargill plant that caused several workers to die from COVID

I wish we lived in a society where the WMD guy was too ashamed to ever comment on another war.

β€˜Mass Death on This Scale Is Incomprehensible’ | The Tyee Overdose deaths are trending down, but BC is still in the thick of a crisis. Here’s what the data tells us.

So far more than 19,053 British Columbians have been killed since early 2014, when unregulated fentanyl started showing up in the illicit drug supply.

Grateful to have never experienced this as a mayor’s communications staffer πŸ˜‚

Showing the sitting mayor of Canada’s third largest city a printout of an offensive AI slop image to confirm whether that’s the image he saw that led him to accuse a councillor of a crime, is possibly the weirdest thing I’ve ever done at work. And I once wrote about a merkin art exhibit.

Hmm. Cllr Schmidt, @natefor8.bsky.social, did they address any of the issues of the day, such as workplace violence & harassment within CPS? Did they discuss their commitment to anti-racism & the work that needs to happen in that regard? Have they read any books lately?

City of Calgary data showing increases to property assessments since 2023. Increase was 1% in 2026, but followed 3 years of double digit spikes in assessment value.

Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi holds a press conference at the Palomino in downtown Calgary.

He jokes it’s cruel to host a press conference here with the BBQ smell while he’s fasting for Ramadan.

Nenshi is calling out the provincial budget’s impact on local business owners.

Exactly right. Texas has been running this playbook for decades β€” no income tax, education funded through property taxes, burden falls regressively. Property taxes in Texas are among the highest in the US as a direct result. Alberta is just further behind on the same trajectory.

Alberta’s Tax Advantage Is Being Paid For by Your Property Tax Bill I am sitting here running code to pull and process British Columbia property tax data for a project Gillian Petit and I are doing on property tax regressivity across Canadian provinces β€” work that …

Alberta Budget 2026 didn't raise taxes. It just raised your property taxes β€” the one tool the province left municipalities, then spent years criticizing them for using. Wrote about it.

As Darren notes: a standalone plebiscite would cost $12mil (compared to the $16mil spent on the most recent municipal election) 😬 #yyccc #yyc

lol this is hilarious but I just want to take this moment to brag about my own attention to detail when I did political communications: ensuring that our Rosh Hashanah greeting didn’t have a menorah unlike several other politicians. It was pomegranates and shofars all the way.

I'm no longer a data journalist but, as an independent practitoner, one of my goals is still to help people make sense of the daily deluge of data we're all swimming in.

To that end, I'm hosting this free online session on March 17.

City administration shows other impacts the provincial budget is anticipated to have on Calgary.

Affordable housing, and an increase to the grants the province pays in lieu of property taxes. There's also funding for "partner infrastructure" like schools, post-secondaries.

Here's a look at what the City of Calgary included in its budget submission to the provincial government last year, and what was included in the province's budget tabled last week.

I am unsure what this would do. Or what the question could even be, when #yyc is required to collect this tax on behalf of the provincial government as per the Municipal Government Act. Municipalities in Alberta exist at the whim of provincial legislation. #yyccc
