A deep dive into oxygen sensing Seals directly detect blood oxygen to adjust time underwater

🦭 I was honored to be invited to co-author this perspective for Science with Lucy Hawkes from @exetermarine.bsky.social, showcasing diverse adaptations to hypoxia- responding to a new study by McKnight et al. that suggests that seals use oxygen as a cue to breathe.

Monumental achievement. Good science isn't just some guy in a lab coat who has all the brains. It takes work. It can take years to collect data.

This data is useful. Why? Fisheries. Economies. Shipping. Understanding the effects of our causes. Understanding our living planet.

β€˜Like a giant bird box’: the volunteers building huge snowdrifts for Finland’s pregnant seals As warmer winters melt the snow drifts that endangered Saimaa ringed seals raise their young in, humans are giving them a helping hand

More on Saimaa ringed seal conservation, following positive news on controlling fishing seasons and piling snow for den-making. Seal boxes! Adorable, successful idea: projects for Men's Sheds, senior schools or scouts/guides locally? Would be a great way to involve community. #GoodGreenNews 🌎🦭

Here's an example of how you can use this dataset- we can pull all >600 netCDF files from Dryad to visualize tracks and diving data from 2017 to highlight a single animal with lower foraging success than the others. More on that animal by @RachelHolser: academic.oup.com/conphys/arti...
