Every ed. has valid criticisms, and it's natural to have a preference, but I see so much discourse that sees some as objectively bad because they don't work like the critic's favorite edition.

It also just bums me out to see so many people talk about old school D&D like it was a failed attempt to achieve what 5e does, without exploring the old design on its own terms, and what it has to offer.

There are conservatively 8 different games called Dungeons and Dragons, all with different design goals and core assumptions. Add all the supplement combos (which sometimes change design goals), optional rules, and each table's house rules & unique culture. Everyone is playing a different game.

As someone who really likes D&D, I get really tired of seeing so much discourse that usually just comes down to people playing totally different games, calling them all D&D, and getting flabbergasted that other people play it different.
