This image was taken on a hike up Winchester Mountain in the North Cascade mountains of Washington, on 9/14/2023. The image shows Silesia Ridge, with Mount Rexford (in British Columbia, Canada) behind it. Can you spot the US/Canada border? I had not expected to actually see the border here.

Swans flying over farm fields north of Stanwood, Washington. Visible in the mid distance is Camano Island, while the mountains in the far distance are the Olympic Mountains, with Mount Constance being the prominent peak on the left.

North American birds are dying off faster. It signals a human crisis, too. The accelerating decline of birds is a bellwether of far deeper biodiversity crisis — one that threatens not only beloved species but the humans who live alongside them.
