In 1896, Florence Bascom became the first woman to work for USGS! She was also the first woman to earn a Ph.D. from @jhu.edu (in 1893) and created the geology program at Bryn Mawr College. She retired at age 74.

I did not. But we did the Cajon Pass, tried to do Lone Pine Canyon (closed due to debris flows), Palette Creek, the Palmdale road cut (twice), Ridgecrest, Fossil Falls and the Alabama Hills. That was when R dropped a prickly pear in his lap and things changed for the worse.
The flowers are blooming and it’s fabulous!

Remember, if you feel earthquake shaking drop down to the ground, take cover underneath a sturdy object like a table and hold on until all the shaking has stopped.
Anyway, lots of people felt this, which is expected for a quake this size in this part of the world.

I’m at the airport but I’ll do a deeper dive when I get where I’m going.
Bottom line - there’s been seismicity in this area for a while. Lots of quakes in 2024 including some M3+ quakes. None as big as the M4.9, of course.
