(motives/experience/backhistory tends to seem less egregious to me because it tends to lend itself to supporting the flow of the story, but that also depends on the writer as well, I suppose)

In my experience generally visual description, but what matters to me is that it throws me when the flow of the text is going pretty smoothly, and then all of a sudden there's a whole paragraph dedicated to taking you out of the story and into lengthy description.

I've been tortured by many a story that start out promising, but then feel the need to describe every minute detail of a character every time one is introduced.
