Old Irish Goat carries 3,000 years of Irish history
π𧬠New research has revealed that the Old Irish Goat shares a 3,000-year genetic link with goats living in Ireland during the Late Bronze Age.
The findings suggest the rare indigenous breed represents a continuous Irish lineage stretching back millennia.

A dead Puffin lies on wet sand, its black and white feathers darkened and slick against the beach. The bird rests on its side, wings folded, with its distinctive orange bill clearly visible against the pale sand.
Heartbreaking: Right now, thousands of Puffins are washing up along our coasts and further afield.
It is devastating to see.
These birds are Red-listed in the UK and already under serious pressure.
Mass deaths like this, known as a βseabird wreckβ, can take years for colonies to recover from...

This Microscope Monday π¬ we invite you to marvel at a beautiful ventral view of a Daphnia (aka water flea).
Here at FBA we absolutely love these amazing freshwater micro-crustaceans! Did you know that the Dutch naturalist and pioneering microscopist Jan Swammerdam (1637β1680) is credited as the first scientist to identify and describe water fleas?
He also produced the earliest known detailed illustrations of the Daphnia water flea, which were published in his 1669 work Historia Insectorum Generalis (General History of Insects)... referring to the organism as Pulex aquaticus arborescens β "the water flea with the branching arms" β or according to Google translate... "water flea tree". How fabulous is that!?
If you are intrigued by wee freshwater organisms, then you may like to check out our courses for 2026 and find out more about the wonderful world of freshwater biology.
This Microscope Monday π¬ we present an adorable Daphnia.
