Brighton Park ICE Operation Shooting (Sat. 04-Oct-2025) By andy J.S. Decepida Due to the paucity of details in report from The Washington Post, I did my own research on the incident. The culmination of which is here below. On Sat. 04-Oct-2025, federal agents from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and ICE were conducting a large enforcement action (❝Operation Midway Blitz❞) in Chicago when violence erupted in the Brighton Park neighbourhood on the city’s Southwest Side. According to DHS and Border Patrol statements, a caravan of cars ambushed agents near 39th Street and Kedzie Avenue. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said agents were ❝boxed in by 10 cars❞ and ❝rammed❞ by vehicles; one driver was found to be armed with a semi-automatic handgun, so agents fired ❝defensive shots,❞ striking the woman’s vehicle. The 30-year-old female driver —later identified by DHS as Marimar Martinez— drove herself about a mile to a nearby repair shop, where paramedics found her and took her to Mount Sinai Hospital (she was treated and released). No federal officers were seriously injured. Protests and clashes with federal agents immediately followed the shooting. Hundreds of bystanders gathered on Kedzie Avenue, chanting slogans (❝ICE go home❞ and ❝Don’t take the bait❞) and hurling water bottles as agents deployed tear gas, rubber projectiles, and flash-bang grenades into the crowd. Eyewitness and Local Accounts Residents and onlookers described the scene as chaotic and frightening. A 29-year-old gas station cashier identified only as ❝Nari❞ told reporters he heard ❝about three loud pops that he thought sounded like gunfire,❞ then went outside to see ICE agents positioned by the street. Nearby resident Claudia Zuno said, ❝We see it on the news, we see it on our phones, but to see it live is just shocking — that this is America, this is the country we love.❞ Another local, identified only as Crystal, said people in the

neighbourhood were terrified: ❝People are scared to go out…kids are afraid to go to school. We should not be living like this.❞ Video shot by onlookers showed protesters being corralled and detained: Sara Barrera, who was livestreaming, said her boyfriend followed police orders to step back but was still thrown to the ground by agents. ❝He had his hand behind his back and they started saying he had a gun, but he was just scratching his back,❞ Barrera said. ❝They all pointed guns toward him and ran towards him… They’re doing way too much. They’re not even going for what they came here to do anymore…that was not an immigration issue.❞ Several protesters said federal tactics were unwarranted. Chicago-area activist Brandon Lee (spokesperson for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights) disputed the feds❛ version of events. He told the Chicago Tribune that volunteer ❝rapid response❞ teams heard that ❝ICE’s car collided with a civilian car and then agents shot five bullets,❞ a summary at odds with the official account. After the shooting, one demonstrator (mother Elizabeth Ruiz) reported seeing agents ram a car driven by her 21-year-old son, Anthony Ruiz, and then arrest him. Ruiz later said she angrily told officers: ❝It was one of your guys that rammed my son, why are you arresting him?❞ In general, neighbours described the confrontation as a ❝pure escalation,❞ saying federal agents seemed intent on provoking protesters. Official Statements (DHS, CPD, State) Federal officials painted the incident as a premeditated ambush. DHS spokesman McLaughlin said the agents were on routine patrol and suddenly boxed in; one driver was armed, so agents fired to protect themselves. DHS claimed the woman was later placed in FBI custody and was named in CBP intelligence bulletins for allegedly doxxing agents online. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem wrote on social media that agents had been ❝ambushed❞ and that she was sending in additional ❝special operations❞

forces. The White House similarly defended the response: a spokeswoman said Trump authorized 300 Illinois National Guard troops to protect ❝federal officers and assets❞, and the White House said Trump ❝will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness plaguing American cities.❞ Local law enforcement emphasized they were not involved in the shooting. The Chicago Police Department issued a statement saying officers were called to document a person-shot report and keep traffic clear, but are ❝not involved in the incident or its investigation,❞ which is being handled by federal authorities. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office declined to comment specifically on the shooting. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, meanwhile, publicly warned against any use of the Guard. He said Trump’s team had given him an ❝ultimatum❞ to federalize 300 Guard troops or they would be sent by force. Pritzker rebuffed that demand, calling it ❝absolutely outrageous and unAmerican❞. He charged that the deployment was ❝not a serious effort to protect public safety,❞ but rather a political stunt ❝about control,❞ pulling guardsmen away from their jobs and families for a ❝manufactured performance.❞ Investigative and Contrasting Coverage Journalists and investigators on the ground noted inconsistencies in the federal narrative. WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times reporters explicitly stated they had ❝not independently verified❞ the DHS account. In fact, Chicago Fire officials reported the wounded woman was found near 35th Street & California Avenue, contrary to DHS’s vague initial location, and taken to Mt. Sinai in ❝fair❞ condition (DHS had said she drove herself, but Fire Dept. found her). Police radio logs released later showed Border Patrol agents calling for help, reporting about 30 agents ❝surrounded by a large crowd,❞ though no CPD backup was sent. Federal prosecutors’ records (cited in a U.S. Justice Department press release) say that a CBP agent fired five shots

after the agents’ car was boxed in by the suspects’ vehicles at 39th & Kedzie. Those records corroborate some official claims (5 shots fired) but make no mention of ICE using tear gas or of the protesters’ own actions — details mainly reported by local outlets. Similarly, Chicago Tribune coverage highlighted eyewitness scepticism. Tribune reporters quoted migrants and activists who said ICE had ❝thrown an unmarked car off the road❞ rather than the other way around. The Tribune noted that federal statements described protesters as ❝domestic terrorists,❞ whereas local witnesses saw mostly peaceful demonstrators angry at ICE tactics. (One activist leader said federal agents began by ramming protesters❜ vehicles, then arrested a young U.S. citizen, turning the story ❝all around.❞) In summary, local investigative accounts underscored sharp differences between the federal account (an ambush by armed extremists) and what witnesses said they saw (agents using military tactics against largely peaceful bystanders). Community and Political Reactions Community leaders and advocacy groups sharply criticized the aggressive federal response. Alderman Julia Ramirez (12th Ward, which includes Brighton Park) said she witnessed ❝pure escalation❞ by heavily armed agents on Saturday. She echoed neighbours' anger that ICE seemed intent on provoking confrontation and stressed that ❝this community stands with all of our neighbours… especially our immigrant neighbours.❞ An Illinois immigrant-rights leader also denounced the operation. The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

It appears that the federal agents occupying Portland have people embedded with them charged with the task of producing stories presenting the government’s version of events. Ironically, this was the sort of work JD Vance did in Iraq before he decided he was against that war.

This is how ICE detains individuals without any warrants, even in the presence of a lawyer making requests.
