Great to see our MOSAIC story about an easy, cloning-free efficient protocol for mutating plasmids using recombineering is out now officially and the cover story of ASC Synthetic Biology pubs.acs.org/toc/asbcd6/1... ! Great shoutout to Marijn van den Brink, Tim Althuis and Christophe Danelon!

'hey mela' is the first vegan pregnancy test in the world. Now available in Germany.

What could be vegan about it?

These tests are based on antibodies that are usually farmed from small rodents kept in cages, infected with hybridoma cells.

This test is based on AB expressed from algae!! ๐Ÿงช

Ga stemmen 29 oktober.

Sounds like a good plan to keep it simple and start like that, worked often well for us. Try to see maybe based on limited intermediate OD checks (glass tubes that fit in spectrophotometer can be convenient) if strain already speeds up, so you can see soon enough if better strains take over the pop.

I'm going to be advertising for a few positions in my group in the next couple of months for a big project on synthetic microbial communities.

I would love to hear from you if you are interested and I'd also appreciate if everyone could share this far and wide!

Escherichia coli selection strains for growth-coupled metabolic engineering Synthetic metabolism has the potential to transform carbon capture, bioremediation, or bioproduction strategies. To transfer metabolic designs from anโ€ฆ

#Growth-coupled #selection just got an update ! In the last years, E. coli selection strains for #central , #amino #acid and #energy metabolism intermediates were created by the community. So, we compiled them and revisit the core concepts of growth coupling.

A line chart titled โ€œAnnual COโ‚‚ emissionsโ€ shows the global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry from 1950 to 2023. The y-axis represents emissions in billions of tonnes (t), ranging from 0 to 40 billion t. The x-axis covers the years from 1950 to 2023.

The chart presents a steady increase in emissions from approximately 5 billion tonnes in 1950 to over 36 billion tonnes in 2023. Key features include:

A consistent upward trend from 1950 through the early 1970s.

A brief plateau and dip around 1980โ€“1983.

A strong growth trend resuming in the late 1980s.

A sharp increase during the 2000s.

A slight drop around 2008โ€“2009, likely due to the global financial crisis.

A major dip in 2020, attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A rapid rebound in emissions after 2020, continuing the upward trend to a new high in 2023.

A blue line labeled โ€œWorldโ€ traces these changes over time.

Below the chart, the data source is listed as the Global Carbon Budget (2024), and the graphic is credited to OurWorldInData.org with a Creative Commons license (CC BY). A footnote explains that the data includes emissions from coal, oil, gas, flaring, cement, and steel, but excludes land-use changes such as deforestation.

I get annoyed at the narrative that all the awareness and work on climate change hasn't done anything. Yes, global COโ‚‚ emissions indeed continue to climb, but we don't know the counterfactual. When I was in grad school, we were on track for 5ยฐC of warming. Now it's below 3ยฐC. That's progress.
