Games I'm playing in 2025: Chromatic Shadows, LOTR 5e, Shadowdark, Battletech.

Yeah, I'm enjoying how fast it plays. We banged out a complete lance vs lance battle, while learning the rules, in about as much time as it takes us to get through 3-4 turns of combat in classic BT.

So far, making small changes to character creation procedures and BP allocation. Nothing major, just smoothing out the process. The rules are going to be relatively unchanged, just expanded, cleaned up and rebalanced in a few key places.

CHROMATIC SHADOWS CORE update: I'm done with the first major pass of writing. All chapters are blocked in, including the "city kit" and the intro adventure. 256 pages so far into raw layout. Circling back to the beginning, and working through the laundry list of notes page by page.

Nice, I saw that but didn't back it. Figured I should play with my existing pile of Battletech boxes before I invest in a new fighty robot game :)

Yeah, the hex maps are super cool. Double sided with desert on one side and grassland on the reverse. Each of the Battletech boxed sets come with 2 maps I believe.

It was an interesting terrain set-up. Sort of a big diagnal division of cliffs between both sides. My Griffin jumper was all over the high elevation, but it still couldn't save him 😅

Chromatic Shadows got drone rules right & I'm proud of that. We don't skimp on options either: drone decks, multiple models, diff. operation modes (jumped in, remote, auto), customization/ hard points. Could easily be a slog, but its probably the cleanest major subsystem in the game.

Fun fact, all the Role art for Chromatic Shadows Core is based on PCs from the playtest crew.

Land of Calyx has been my go-to setting for OSE and AD&D, gonna try to run it this week using Shadowdark. If I like how it plays, strongly considering a re-release for that system.

Game design observation: if your gimmick is too difficult to pull off reliably/ prone to repeat failure, the players won't engage with it. They'll try something else that works instead. If you want a player to do a thing, design it so that it "feels" fun and empowering. Don't nerf your players!

Since idk shit about kickstarter, I think I'm going to take this book within sight of the finish line before I bother to start crowdfunding. I want there to be as little time as possible between the time of funding and time of delivery.

Next hurdle is finishing the sample adventure and tightening up the pregens. Almost done with the initial playtest, will fold any notes and feedback into the working draft.

Chromatic Shadows Core update:
240 pg into layout, new page styles, big sprawl zone chapter done, wrapped downtime phase chapter (stuff to do between missions: start gang, build safehouse, etc), new character sheet (dots!), 4 new occult assets, approving new art for role chapter.
