I know several instructors who are looking at the spate of professors getting fired for how they've tried to handle right wing op students being racist or sexist for viral clout and deciding it's time to leave before finding out that their university will sell them out too

My guess: if Trump had been aggressive, he could have won points with his base by appearing to stand up to him; if the meeting went well (as it did), then he gets Trump off his back for a while, and that helps him govern. So maybe he saw it as a win-win?
