Yes. Think of the work of the New Tork Times and the Washington Post during the Vietnam War and then Watergate, and how they forced accountability on the powerful. Of course, the US had an independent Supreme Court at the time that sided with the NYT and WP as Nixon tried to shut them down.

The midterms, if they happen at all, will be gerrymandered and rigged to produce the result Trump needs.
