Footage launched our trauma-informed messaging service FemSMS for those displaced and at risk of gender-based violence shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. More than 10,000 are now signed up to to the service. Liberation covered the initiative last July.

“People place candles and flowers along the borders of the memorial. It has become a powerful symbol of war and the people’s tribute to fallen heroes. Unfortunately, this is our reality today.”

“Thousands of flags bear the names of those who have fallen. Among the blue and yellow Ukrainian flags, there are also flags of other countries honoring foreign volunteers who lost their lives defending Ukraine.”

Yesterday, between drone strikes, Iryna, one of our FemSMS leaders, filmed this aching reminder at the People’s Memorial on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv. She writes, “It is informally called the ‘Meadow of Flags’ or ‘Flags on Maidan.’ Each flag in this memorial represents a life lost to the war.”
