I love it! Except when one "swallows a valve" or whatever the hell happened in mine. I bet it was fun to fly. I last wrote about Norseman airplanes, which I think were the bush plane precursors to Beavers and Otters. They are all great planes. Not many left with radial engines anymore.

THIS. We got so lost arriving there from an international flight last year. No directional signs, construction walls everywhere, and no working escalators. Thank goodness we had a fairly long layover.

Great photo! I lost a lot of my photos during a bad split years ago, so I sympathize. But still...damn. The Wiens were a few of those early pilots that lasted through the decades.

Ford Trimotor. This was the Detroit Expedition Fokker in 1926 when its wing broke off while accelerating down the runway (this job is not helping with my flying nervousness...).

Funny how I've spent the past year looking at photos like this...Can you guess the plane type? The early Fairbanks pilots would have to hop over to Harding Lake on wheels in late spring, where they would switch to skis to fly to Barrow or wherever, then do the same in reverse.

Mudhole Smith airport is my fave, especially when you could fly in on the Alaska Airlines "Milk Run" on a 737 Combi and then wait for the guys to shove your bag through the flaps onto the floor. Small airports are the best (except when they weigh you first).

Being on ice freaks me out, and that was before all of the stories in Alaska of people disappearing through it. I only drove the ice road across the river in Fairbanks once. Not worth the few minutes saved, but I had options.

I don't fly enough to have a good list. But the three times I've flown through Denver were awful.

It sure wasn't moving well in the cold. I asked the MK Center if I could feed it to their huge trout and they said hell nah, we don't need more invasive bullfrogs. Didn't have the heart to toss it in a dumpster but I found a good place far, far from my yard. I can't stand their croaks!
