Thank you for this. Some of the pieces coming out in the immediate aftermath of TrustCon were maddening and so disappointing. This piece was much more balanced and reflected what TrustCon was this year.

1) "Toxic platforms" are often where their communities are
2) the threats aren't just on the "toxic platforms." They're in real life, outside their homes. They're from the executives, threatening their jobs. They're from the smaller, even more toxic platforms people don't talk about.

IDK where you've been outside of AI... but there are folks talking. They're not hitting the big media... but they're talking. And there were even panels about it at TrustCon. Some good points in this piece... but some real big misses too.

Not to mention watching what happened to him had a chilling effect on others speaking out.

I was counting Alex the giant therapy rabbit, also a true hero.

As someone on Wreddit said today, "In hindsight, we really should have been more specific when we told Satan to take the old orange racist. I can't blame him for getting confused."

Also, he was always a shitheel, just no one outside of wrestling really knew it until like 20 years ago.

This was the part that infuriated me the most. What, because it's words on a screen no one will be harmed? There are PEOPLE behind those words. A community of people behind those words. This study has made me (an anthropologist who studied online communities and a Community Manager) see red.

Honestly, i feel the same. I was skeptical at best, and this trailer does nothing to assuage that.

But that soundtrack SLAPS and i will be buying it instantly.

This is what they voted for. They voted to be duped.

Users can do such amazing things even w/in platforms. But the platforms have to be willing to open their eyes and SEE how cool their users are and let them do it. The RPAN experiment over at Reddit is a good example of this; both in what they can do, and how platforms will shut it down.

gotta admit, fave season so far.

We need more in the party like you. I have lost so much faith in the Democratic Party, it is hard to be a member anymore.

Former Reddit admin. This is correct. Not allowing Twitter links is not something admins would step in on (at least when i was there). The privatizing thing is a completely different issue, and while i disagreed with the action, i understand their mental hoops to get there.
