Ridiculous. And let's be honest, they'll need ACT and keeping it will be a non-negotiable for ACT, so it's not going to happen and they know it's not going to happen. She's just setting up another campaign promise they justify breaking with "the coalition made us do it".

Can't trust what he's said either way. I doubt he'd blow up the coalition over this, but I bet he'll get a few more policy concessions out of NACT if the bill gets drawn.

That logic is equally valid everywhere in the world, and that's why I'm pretty pessimistic about the future. All the meetings and agreements and commitments over decades and humanity put more carbon into the atmosphere in 2024 than any year before.

I'd also note that in terms of change in emission per capita since 1990, we're lagging many of the countries we like to compare ourselves to. We're down 20%, but the US is down ~30%, the EU is down ~40%, and the UK is down nearly 60%. If we can't lead we should at least keep up.

The problem is that climate change isn't just potentially existential some time down the road. It's also an increasingly heavy boat anchor on the economy right now.

24.11.2025 06:13 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It's the moral thing to do even if no one follows. We've defined our national identity heavily in terms of "clean, green" and pro-environment. But we have one of the highest emissions rates per capita in the world. We're also one of the richest countries in the world. If we can't/won't, who will?

What about people in positions of power whose decisions result in hundreds of thousands of deaths? Is Musk in favour of the death penalty in those cases?

24.11.2025 03:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I get it, but fucking hell people need to get more serious about climate change.

Smoking rates increased in NZ between 2023 and 2024, the first increase in more than a decade. That is entirely Costello's fault. The drop in our position is completely justified by the outcomes of her incompetence and corruption.

Gaslighting to try to head off stories now? Or just incompetence?
Either way, more climate change denialism.

Any time some idiot makes a claim like this, the first question should always be 'would you trade places with one of these "career beneficiaries"'? The number of people choosing that life is vanishingly small.
But if Glen doesn't like the welfare system he is welcome to fuck off to the US or Russia.

What's up are the levels of hypocrisy and corruption.

20.11.2025 03:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

More climate vandalism from this disaster of a government. And the absolute contempt they must hold the public in to utter blatant lies like "it's not due to government policies". Disgusting.

He should lose his portfolios. I bet Luxon will defend him though.

Maybe not better, but they don't break down as much as "real" machines. Right? Right?

17.11.2025 12:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yep. "We're willing to work with the right wing politicians that formed the worst government is living memory" is not the centrist position they seem to think it is.

It's one thing to not want to discuss cases in public, but if the affected user is not being informed it's an unfair system open to abuse. Without transparency you will lose the trust of your users. Please do not go down the road of secret decisions with no recourse from your users.

12.11.2025 07:50 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It's corruption and it's widely recognised. That's why our score in Transparency International's corruption perceptions index is down to 83 and we've dropped from 2nd to 4th. A decade ago our score was 91 so it's a long term trend, but this government is the most blatant I've seen in NZ.

"Appearing to close his eyes"? Why the weasel words? His eyes are clearly closed and no one is suggesting someone else closed them for him.

Technology certainly won't improve fast enough to allow the Government to meet it's commitments (let's not call them goals) unless the Government is willing to put a lot of money into research, which this one isn't.

"It's vital that America wins..."
What does "winning" even mean here? Ok, they're first to create an AI of some particular level, but so what? What does it enable?

08.11.2025 02:59 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is insanity. This is a government lying to our faces about it's commitment to combating climate change while it's actions very clearly show that their real goal is to undermine emissions limits.

Weird framing from 1news given NZF increased by only 1pp while the Greens increased by 2. Hard to say if 1pp is even statistically significant. Overall the CoC lost 2pp and Lab/Green/TPM was stable.
It is bizarre and frustrating that so many people still support this disaster of a government.

"We need to bring high-paying jobs to NZ, that's why we're refusing to pay doctors properly"
"We need to improve kids academic performance, that's why we're refusing to pay teachers properly"
Once again asking journalists to ask the obvious questions of this logic-free soundbite machine.

I'd like him to explain why NZ is such a different and magical place that we shouldn't have a CGT when most countries do. So far I've yet to hear a clear explanation. Just "it'll wreck the economy!" (How?)

01.11.2025 04:41 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But why is it the job of the leader of National to kill a CGT? We know we're over-invested in property in this country. Most countries have one. If National were the stewards of the economy they claim to be they would support it. They should have implemented one themselves.

Also, how are those turning points? "Axis victories" was the initial direction of the conflict, but they lost in the end. Surely the turning points are the things that caused the war to go from "they're winning" to "now they're losing".
