I am forced to disagree.

There’s been a lot of ink spilled on QAnon and its effect on Trump’s base, and rightfully so. We need to have the same lens applied here, considering the broad buy-in to the idea that there is no organic support for the Palestinian people by our political, academic, and media elite.

Every few weeks we gotta make posts like this”call your dem reps to tell them to not vote to allow Lord Killdude to shove people into a volcano” and then the dem reps go “we’ve made an amazing deal where Lord Killdude can have his volcano so long as he promises not to shove people into it”

No he didn't, he voted against the ACA.

And getting your opponents to do heinously unpopular things that show a split in their caucus is good politics. If the GOP rallied their legislators to vote for ACA subsidies, only for Trump to veto them? That weakens them, and him, further.

Who are you talking to?

This was an insane and embarrassing thing for the Democrats to do.

That is an utterly foolish way to look at the politics of this. And it was a cowardly and foolish way for the Democrats to handle this. Hours before they passed this monstrosity, Trump and Hegseth were booed by the whole stadium at an NFL game! The GOP got smoked in elections just days ago!

So why engage in the shutdown at all? If they were going to pass a CR in exchange for nothing anyway, why did they bother with the 40 days?

I can think of at least one other reason.

That's not a counterpoint, it's an excuse for capitulation.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

Important to understand this. There's a reasonable chance that your Dem Senator who voted against it and is acting mad now was in on the play. It's the same reason why they scheduled the surrender for AFTER the election this week. They didn't want people pissed at Dems right before an election.

They were banned before, and I don't see why they'd necessarily be banned going forward. Dems have now shown there's nothing they'll stand and fight for; if you're the GOP, why aren't you going to act like that's true?

I don't know why that bet would be any better after this bill passes. It certainly won't be come January 31st.

And now we've told them they should keep doing that, that that's a valid tactic they can deploy.

The GOP is cataclysmically unpopular now, in part, because the shutdown is having terrible effects that voters realize are the fault of the GOP.

But if the Dems cave here, in exchange for NOTHING, voters will believe the shutdown was their fault, or some bothsides nonsense.

By continuing to do exactly what they've been doing; holding the line for an EXTREMELY reasonable ask, while the majority party immiserates 10s of millions of people as a pressure tactic designed to allow them to immiserate tens of millions more.

A legislative extension of the ACA subsidies.

So Democrats get:

1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays

2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail

3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts

Those all seem like wins for the GOP.
