That shift in pressure, like a door had closed in another room. One more second lost. One more breath closer to the end. Lily found it before he did. She was walking the stairs with that same careful curiosity that always unnerved him. Not fear. Not defiance. She wasn’t hunting secrets. She was simply… interested in the shape of the place. Her hand slid along the banister like she was reading the stone, and when she reached the third step, she paused. A single petal lay there. Still red. Still warm. She bent, picked it up with both hands — gently, like it might speak — and turned it over in her fingers. The Beast watched from the hall. He didn’t mean to hide. He just didn’t know how to stand there without scowling. He wore the scowl like armor carved from thorn. She wore beauty like guilt she could not name. When she saw him, she didn’t flinch. She didn’t speak. She crossed the stone floor, slow and deliberate, and held the petal out to him like it still belonged to something. He stared at it. At her. At her hands.
