This semester it is probably 30% handouts and 70% books in terms of pages. I supplement my photocopy strategy with asking students to get cheap print editions of the major class texts. For this semester, for instance, it's three Oxford World's Classics editions.

I used to do the course packets, but our campus switched to nearly 100% digital course materials. As a result, I’ve gone to printing out and copying what would have been in the course pack and then just handing it out. Not ideal but I like it better than a bunch of students in their phones.

Reading a passage from the 1890 Lippincott’s version of _The Picture of Dorian Gray_ at our campus’s banned book week event. So glad our library organized this!

Caring about thought in time means caring
about scholarship as wellβ€”it has always seemed strange to me that the call
to deepen and enrich our readings of the literature of the past so often
goes hand in hand with a shallow and impoverished reading of the texts of
our more recent critical past, as if we could throw away the past fifty years
of reading practice to encounter the text in all its purity. This is not so
much an ethics for meβ€”though I think we might inquire about what it
means if you have different ethics for reading one kind of text than
anotherβ€”but a problem of misrecognition of our own thinking and
reading.

Amazing moment of communal singing during @badvictorianist.bsky.social’s great magic lantern show. We don’t always ask god to bless England at VISAWUS. The constitution only requires we do it at every other meeting. #visawus2025

Say NO to Trump’s loyalty oaths and extortion of our universities!

We will NOT throw our students, faculty, and staff under the bus to comply with undemocratic and partisan ideological agendas.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

White House fires much of the National Council on the Humanities The White House appeared to fire all but four members of the National Council on the Humanities, an advisory board to the head of the government’s grantmaking agency.

Flagging this bit: β€œSome of the members whose names were removed from the website had been appointed by Trump.”

John Roberts Wrote Trump a Permission Slip to Indict Comey Political targets of the Justice Department can thank the chief justice.

I wrote about John Roberts as the chief enabler of the prosecution of James Comeyβ€”and how his jurisprudence gives cover to other sham investigations and prosecutions, like that of Lisa Cook, that judges simply have no power to second-guess for corrupt motive.
