Leeds is fairly unusual in probably being a Celtic place name rather than the usual Anglo Saxon /Norse origins.

12) after the ice - a survey of humanity in the 10,000 years after the end of the last ice age. Written 20 years ago and so inevitably dated now.

9) 1177BC - a survey of the bronze age world on the cusp of its demise

7) psychology of secrets - Andrew Gold's run in with cults and odd practices
8) the fall of Roman Britain - highlighted how different Britain was from the rest of the Roman Empire.

5) All the tea in China - the story of how tea became so important in Britain and how 1 man stole the secrets of growing tea.
6) Revolutionary Spring - Chris Clark's massive account of the 1848 revolutions

3) guest house for widows - well researched account of young women who supported ISIS
4) Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister - the story of the Song sisters who were close to power in China for much of the 20th century.

I've read 14 history and non fiction books in 2024. In order
