One often hears of writers that rise and swell with their subject, though it may seem but an ordinary one.
Peaceful days
I like the basket idea. A backpack would be hands-free, assuming everything could fit in there.
Been thinking of you, friend!
Finding a toilet nearby during an emergency or an approved place to pull over when tired is like finding an oasis in the desert. Rest stops have saved my sanity on trips many times over the years.
I make a 13-hour drive to visit friends once a year, and rest stops are my salvation. I plan stops based on where the best ones are. No pressure to buy; just use the bathroom, stretch your legs, maybe nap. Much friendlier than businesses that expect their pound of flesh before shooing you out.
Can get other things at rest stops too, if properly maintained. Vending machines, tourist info, etc. Some have great (and free) water bottle filling stations. At gas stations I feel pressured to buy, or that I will be reported for taking a nap on corporate property, say. At rest stops I can relax.
Surprised to see @samamick.bsky.social, whose work I generally respect, deciding to bear the torch to protect Kobe's basketball legacy. Why? Wilt already had 100; Kobe didn't have the record. He had his personal best. Bam just beat it. This doesn't affect Kobe one whit.
Kobe took 50 shots in his final game, which at the time was more than any player in 30 years. It was shameless but fun. So was Bam's 83.
Sam, I generally love your writing and think it's rock-solid sensible. This is not that. Telling a professional who reached a personal pinnacle that maybe they should've held off because some people might feel bad makes no sense. Kobe's legacy is in no way tarnished by Bam eclipsing 81 points.
1. Horrifying ruling out of the 4th Circuit.
An all-Republican 4th Circuit panel has just ruled that states can compel trans adults to "appreciate their sex" by enacting care bans.
It even directly says that trans adult care bans are legal in the ruling.

RIP to your well-loved salad spinner, though now I'm thinking about getting a salad spinner to work by pulling a ripcord like an old lawnmower.
touching grass is not enough i need to Confront Grass
Ironically in a twisted bid to return to that same time period.
I talked to a very happy Jared McCain about his new situation and the trade that “completely blindsided” him www.cbssports.com/nba/news/jar...
If you add up all salaries for every WNBA player, you get a total of about $20 million -- or what the Cavs are paying Jarrett Allen this year.
Pay the players what they're owed.
I've only ever heard that you have to, but this is the first time I've heard of someone being sick on their last day. Could you email or call HR and see if that's possible? Surely they'd understand.
Like Trump, he's a guy who enjoys being The Guy. All he cares about is whatever image of swaggering masculinity he can project, and damn everyone and everything else.
damn it’s crazy how the slurs filled the chat all by themselves. couldn’t be helped i’m sure. chats are always devolving of their own accord
Eek. Feel better!
Just seen and shared!
I love that you enjoyed it! My sister isn't on Bluesky but I'll be sure to share this with her.
I like it. Given the context, I wonder if "morning" was used intentionally in the title re: mourning.
As ever, I pin my hopes on the Arkansans willing to speak up and speak out. Their courage manifests as small miracles we cling to; the hope that one day, things will be better. I want to be one of those people. I want to do my part to encourage more miracles. When is the time, if not now?
Incremental change is possible here. Arkansas is so small that few candidates are truly anonymous, and being among the people really matters. We have multiple news organizations to keep us informed. Our FOIA policy has been kneecapped but remains a good option for citizen action.
I struggle to find positives in my home state through the gloom. But there are positives here. People are listening, and voting more (at least right now). Urban areas are trying to hold up, though they can do better. Community organizations are small, but mighty.
There is so much here that is bad, and it will remain bad for the foreseeable future. Don't count on Arkansas to jump up any national metrics in health care, education or income anytime soon. Probably not even in my lifetime.
Sanders' megaprison proposal is wholly disliked by just about everyone but she will keep pushing for it. Her education policies continue to sink schools. Whoever wins Secretary of State will surely further curtail voting rights here. MAGA continues to reign supreme in the Natural State.
For the general election this fall, Gov. Sanders sail into a second term. Her opponent, who won last night, has raised $4,000 thus far IIRC. Sen. Tom Cotton faces strong competition but the odds strongly favor him, as they do Rep. French Hill; both enthusiastic rubber stamps for Trump.
