Black History: Nina Simone.
A few years ago I was in a band, The Velocicats, and we covered “Feeling Good”. Then I watched her in “Summer of Soul”, a documentary about the 1969 Harlem cultural festival. Last night. See Facebook for full text: www.facebook.com/share/1EtfDL...

The autobiography of Miles Davis is excellent reading for Black History Month. Written in his unique voice - opinionated, confrontational, and candid. He was influential from the beginning of Bop to the height of Fusion. Working with so

Eagles at Sphere Las Vegas on Saturday night. At 77, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B Schmit still have their vocal range and instrumental chops intact. Vince Gill, Deacon Frey, and Chris Holt masterfully made up for the departed Glenn Frey and ousted Don Felder.

For Black History Month I'd like to recognize some of the people who have inspired and influenced me, particularly in my music life.

James Jamerson. Anyone who has been playing bass for a while knows of this man and his work. As an uncredited session player he laid down the bass lines on many of the Motown Records hit songs of the 1960's and early 70's. He reinvented bass playing with his melodic parts, all improvised in the studio - "I'd hear the melody line from the lyrics and I'd build the bass line around that."

Though he was anonymous to the public, Jamerson's playing was integral to the Motown sound and he inspired and influenced countless bassists, many who emulated his style without knowing who he was. His first album credit was on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", where he was listed on the record sleeve as "The incomparable James Jamerson".

When Motown Records moved to Los Angeles in 1972, Jamerson relocated as well. He continued to play on hit recordings with a diverse group of artists, but by the 1980's his style fell out of favor with record producers and he began having trouble getting gigs. Long troubled with alcoholism, he died August 2nd, 1983 at the age of 47.

James Jamerson and his fellow Motown session players, known as the “Funk Brothers” are celebrated in the book and film “Standing In The Shadows Of Motown”.

Bl Black History Month
Wilton Felder, August 31, 1940 - September 27, 2015

This amazing musician was a double threat. As a tenor Saxophonist he co-founded The Jazz Crusaders in Los Angeles in 1960. More info in alt text because of Bluesky arbitrary character limits - please fix this!

The light at the end of the trail. And a couple of cool lens flares.
The crews have been at work on the W 52nd to Blanton leg of the Ridgeline and it’s in prime shape. I’m thankful to have these trails so close to home.

Looks like the rain will be back in a few days. FOMO and inspiration from friends got me out on the trail for a Monday afternoon hike.

Eugene/Architecture/Alphabet: O Olive Plaza (my photo) This is the next in my Eugene/Architecture/Alphabet series of blog posts, the focus of each being a landmark buildin...

Here’s some interesting info on the building from a local architect:

I like seeing Eugene’s historic buildings get upgrades. Olive Plaza was built as affordable housing in 1978 and continues that mission today. I liked the previous color scheme, but the new seismic improvements and rain resistant exterior cladding should help it survive another 47 years.

Great tone. Light weight. Short scale. 24 frets. Fun to play. First reissue Danelectro Longhorn basses. My collection is nearing completion.

The character limit seems arbitrary to me. I suppose twitter folks are used to it, but it seems odd and frustrating.

2021, actually. I don’t think there is a way to edit posts on this platform.

I had a bit more to say about this photo, but I found out the blue sky has a character limit. Now that’s just lame. A pretty major disqualifier of this platform for me.

But yes, I suspect people who are comfortable talking person to person are probably oblivious to the barriers for those who aren’t.

Do you mean from a customer service standpoint or in a work situation? I personally often find it hard to even get people to answer a phone call. And often the only info source seems to be FAQ or chat based.
