JavaScript broke the web (and called it progress) We replaced simple websites with complex apps nobody asked for. Now it takes a complex build pipeline just to change a headline.

I wish more people thought like Jono does.

This is from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson aired on May 20th, 1977.

Carl Sagan says something very important, a strong message that didn't lose any validity since then.

Figured I’d hop on here today for the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.

With everything going on right now, it’s easy to feel like regular folks can’t make a difference – but the ACA is a reminder that change is possible when we fight for progress.

Kindly pardon me for shamelessly hocking my wares. I do try to keep it to a minimum, but I've decided I'd like to try to buy some eggs. Please share this post if it pleases thee.

I'd like more organizations on Bluesky to create a feed instead of a starter pack.

Restrict the feed to your people and require some sort of hashtag or emoji for the post to appear in the feed.

I think this would create a nice clean feed with a high signal to noise ratio.

In Praise of "Normal" Engineers πŸ› οΈ A guest article by Charity Majors

I just wrote a piece called "In Praise of 'Normal' Engineers". (partly paywalled)

When people talk about world-class engineering orgs, they usually have in mind orgs that are top-heavy with the most experienced and pedigured talent.

This gets it exactly backwards.

The CFPB has returned more than $21 BILLION to consumers who were cheated by big corporations.

It should come as no surprise that an unelected billionaire wants it gone.

The CFPB is protected by law and I will fight to #ReopenCFPB.

If you're using VSCode + Vim, you may want to let VSCode handle Ctrl-p to open the file picker. If so, add this to your settings.json:

"vim.handleKeys": {
"<C-p>": false
}

I hope this cold weather in Georgia will have some impact on mosquitoes this spring/summer.

I think we need more sustained cold weather, but perhaps a 13 degree day will help.

I have always thought the tetanus vaccine was only for tetanus, but it turns out it's actually the Tdap vaccine. This vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

And... Whooping cough cases were up 600% from 2023 to 2024.

Get the vaccine.

New term for me on the weather app: "freezing fog".

"Freezing fog is a weather phenomenon where tiny water droplets in the fog remain in a supercooled state and freeze upon contact with surfaces that are at or below freezing temperature."

Same idea as the recurring reservation, but adding in a wellness check-in aspect. Once you've established the reliability of showing up, if you don't show up someone follows up to make sure everything is okay.

Read an article a while back about how people are becoming more isolated. That came to mind while thinking about having the ability to reserve a spot at our favorite breakfast place; same time, same day. Every week.

Then combined the two and thought about wellness reservations.

There have been countless versions of this, but I prefer the shorter rule of thumb when debating build vs buy:

buy what accelerates you, build what differentiates you
