Since the disappointing end of the red wings season, I have found my own opinion to be divorced from the narrative around why the red wings missed the playoffs, and did a little digging.

Define end? 5 years post absolutely gutting it and being mid and still on the way up would not be unexpected.

Scorched earth rebuilds are hell in the cap era.

Easiest list of negatives:

1) abysmal crime rate, especially violent crimes
2) no real political representation
3) private healthcare
4) lower life expectancy
5) lower quality of life
6) we are outnumbered 10-1 and Americans would quickly use higher purchasing power to make us 2nd class citizens

Here we see that despite a reduction of 1 expected goal per sixty, goals per sixty against on the PK increased by ~3 per sixty!

In virtually every category this year, the underlying numbers improved. But last year results were so divorced from expectation that it really colours perception.

Last year, the team ran a pdo bender and had a much better (and unsustainable) shooting percentage.

This year, despite improvements in underlying expected goals per sixty at 5v5, we scored almost 0.75 goals less per sixty. The difference between expected GA and actual GA on the PK is even worse 2/

So the #DRW season is over, and I whipped up something quick and dirty from natural stat trick to get ahead of the argument of whether or not this team is worse than last year.

I would argue that despite the worse result, and despite the flaws of the roster, the 2024-2025 wings were better 1/
