This throwback thriller by Ti West (and a bit part for Greta Gerwig) is a devilishly tense horror that takes place during a Lunar Eclipse (which happens to be tonight).

Another great feminist #horror is The Stepford Wives from 1975.

Someday I’ll do a post dedicated to all the 1970’s horror dedicated to the idea that women are actually people. Of the bunch, this one is the best, as it strips women of their essential humanity and sentience.

Let’s kick it off with Slumber Party Massacre!

I’m not sure I always understood why this was feminist horror as there is a lot for the male gaze to feast upon. I have since come to understand that it wasn’t just the killer being castrated, it was ALSO the viewer. It’s meta-textual!

I missed posting about the daily #horror movie for like a week because I was away for work.

But March is Women’s History Month so I’m going to spend the rest of this month recommending feminist horror!!

This character doesn’t have a single line that isn’t exposition.

Tonight’s #horror movie is The Purge.

I know that pop culture sorta ran away with this concept, and the action-forward sequels didn’t help. But his first movie is brilliant political commentary about race and class.

Quick tip. If Ethan Hawk is in it, it’s got something to say.

Tonight’s #horror is Tales From The Hood.

This black-centered anthology tackles institutional racism, police corruption, & gang violence all without a shred of superficiality. This movie is fun & scary. And Clarence Williams III has one of the BEST versions of Satan ever captured on film.

Tonight’s #horror movie was going to be Bones with Snoop Dogg, but I had the chance to sit down with my son and watch The Warriors instead. He loved it, he kept asking “Did they really do that?” He so used to special effects, watching people just pummel each other & blow shit up is still new to him.

It’s called “The Bone Temple” because of how many penises are in this movie.

This movie is brilliant for a myriad of reasons. And one of them is the way it challenges Western traditions and shines a spotlight on the enduring corruption of the colonial slave trade.

Sinners deserves every accolade it gets. And I pray it continues to draw the ire of lesser men.

By the end of the movie as Smoke murders the evil men who have come to kill him, he should be damned for his bloody, sinful wrath. But he’s not. He dies and joins his family in paradise. Not in Heaven, some distant realm. Something HERE. Something REAL. The dancing ghosts are just out of frame.

The movie is telling us that white, European Christianity is a lie. Put simply. Remmick mocks the prayers he hears for the superstitions they are. Preacher Boy’s entire character arc is coming to understand the magic of his heritage and the truth of the world around him. Walking away from “God.”

What I do not often hear discussed is the ways in which this movie explores the opposite. How white colonizers don’t just steal black culture, they also leave the corpse of their own hollow traditions in its place.

It’s right there from the beginning. The snake, Annie’s magic, the music montage…

Tonight’s #horror is Sinners.

One thing I frequently hear discussed is how vampirism is used to explore themes of cultural appropriation. A white devil steals the bodies and minds of the black community in pursuit of controlling art and culture he had no hand in creating. It’s very well done.

There’s no “male loneliness epidemic” for men who love and respect women.

In The Mouth of Madness by John Carpenter is perfect. Every frame building towards insanity.

Tonight’s #horror movie may not get traction with everyone, and understandably so. But tonight I’m watching Antebellum.

What I like about this movie is that it has a clever narrative structure that makes you question what you’re watching, and when it’s finally revealed, it’s utterly horrifying.

It’s Marci Gras so tonight’s perfect #horror movie is Hatchet.

This low budget slasher is more like a monster movie. Victor Crowley is a horrifying inhuman killing machine, apparently cursed with an unstoppable lust for graphic bloody flesh-rending murder. These movies are bad in the BEST WAY.

Damn. Really cool.

I’m getting a late start, but today’s perfect #horror movie is Candyman 2: Farewell To The Flesh.

I mean, I’m not sure it’s EVER the right time to watch this? But if ever there were one it’s the week of Mardi Gras.

Today’s perfect #horror movie is Heart Eyes.

This movie is the perfect marriage of romantic comedy and horror. It’s bloody as hell. It’s silly and cheesy. And you will never have more fun watching people fall in love while they run for their lives.

It’s Friday the 13th!!!!
So if you’re not watching Part 6 for your daily #horror what are you even doing?

It’s easily my favorite. Jason in full undead glory for the first time. Lumbering, bloody kills, panicking teens, stupid cops. It’s glorious.

The best #horror movie to watch tonight is Pontypool.

This Valentine’s Day kinda-zombie movie is terrifying because of what you DON’T see. It’s claustrophobic, tense, and ramps up in unexpected ways.

Y’know how you never see Jaws and that’s better? This is the zombie version of that.

Tonight’s #horror movie is fucking BLADE.

Wesley Snipes is bad ass and rock hard. Everything cool about this got stolen by the Matrix. Nothing makes sense but everything is cool and sexy and gross and bloody. That scene with the tubby vampire? *chef’s kiss*

Glad you liked it! To me it’s a perfect marriage of romantic-comedy and horror. It perfectly nailed all the tropes from both genres.

Today’s ideal #horror watch is His House.

I don’t usually put much stock in Rotten Tomatoes scores, but this movie more than earns its 100%. It starts slow, but it grows into one of the most terrifying and haunting films I’ve ever seen. It has a dreamlike nightmare quality and a wretched ending.

This movie is a perennial favorite. It’s on my annual list this year for 2/12 because, alas, Heart Eyes has dethroned it for Valentines Day. Such an efficient little horror that does a lot with a little.

Hot take her bangs look great actually.

I mean, Frank Darabont’s is timeless. Love Mike Flanagan but is this redundant?
