Actually, the work of Natalie Zemon Davis would probably be right up your street. Her writing style is so engrossing it's like the people from centuries ago come to life again. You'd love her book The Return of Martin Guerre - it's what they based the film on (with Gérard Dépardieu)

One of my favourite ways to learn about history is through novels. Pachinko taught me so much about Japanese-Korean history, Wild Swans taught me about the Chinese Cultural Revolution, etc. But if it's fictionalised it's a novel. But non-fiction history books are just as fun + exciting! (well, some)
