The Gateway Fred Meyer closure wasn’t a community decision — it was a corporate one.
Big box chains come into neighborhoods, extract profits, and when it no longer fits their bottom line, they leave behind empty lots and lost jobs.
Gateway deserves better, and we'll build it together. 🫶🏾
Seeing folks arguing over whether this is a "good thing" or not and I think they're missing a key point: Closures like this are inherent to the business model of modern "big box" stores and core to their playbook of extracting as much as possible from communities:
