For their final written assignment, I asked my students to reflect on the results of the 2024 election; on what the results say to them about the state of American politics and the electorate, overall. But most importantly, I asked them to tell me about one thing that gives them hope for the future.

The final substantive session of our politics of borders seminar today centered around @memomiller.bsky.social’s book, Build Bridges, Not Walls (2021). At the end of a particularly difficult and emotional semester, we found hope (promise, even) in imagining a different future, and asking, “what if?”
Indeed. I called him my “grad advisor,” but he’s family.
Thirteen years later, I’m still running to my grad advisor to cry. Something about old habits.
