Working with a large corporation is always a situation where the artist has very little control over what happens.

Huge fan of Universes Beyond and genuinely having a great time with all the new folks getting into Magic. I really donβt understand the hate but thatβs fandoms for you especially in the nerd spaces. Mfs ALWAYS angry and itβs so weird. Like what you like and then let people do the same. Easy.
To note, I'm saying this as someone who's released multiple games without crowdfunding.
If you're aiming for a large scale physical release, or something that requires staffing, KS works great! But it's good to prove it's a project you can finish.
Unfortunately, at least for me, that first modality through Kickstarter as a platform (if we're talking Zinequest 1) turned up a lot of unfinished products and hard feelings; so I don't think that era was much better or aspirational.
Absolutely. Hence prerelease rules also work. It can be text-only if that's the only thing feasible.
Crowdfunding requires some assurance from the creator that they're able to make good on what they're asking for; and demonstrated prototyping speaks loudest.
For TTRPGs, folks have released text-only ashcans of games before crowdfunding for a while, which definitely doesn't need crowdfunder capital to produce.
And honestly, so many indie projects crowdfund without delivering, an assurance that a stranger can finish a project feels a reasonable ask now.
