A great blue heron fishing in front of some bald cypress trees

Some people would call this a great blue heron. I would call it just a pretty good blue heron

Don't forget to appreciate the common birds. Just because they're common doesn't mean they aren't special

A male golden crowned kinglet briefly sitting still on a small branch

This is a golden crowned kinglet. These are one of the smallest birds in Illinois, being around 3-4 inches long on average. They also move faster and more unpredictably than a toddler that just chugged a redbull, so getting one to sit still long enough to get a photo was pretty difficult

I'm going on a canoe trip in the boundary waters (NE MN) this week. May the call of the Loons ease my suffering and heal my soul

I almost got a good shot of one the other day but I wasn't fast enough. Those buggers don't like to sit still

A monarch butterfly resting on a yellow flower

Now that it's not a sauna outside, I've been breaking out the camera again. I'm glad to have caught a good photo of a monarch before they leave for the year

And after a while, one poked its head out of the hole. I hung out there for a little while longer, and managed to catch the pair switching spots in a series of photos. Here's the other 2

Yeah I was pretty lucky to find that spot. One day I was on a walk and saw one flying from a distance, and it was near a small wetland with a lot of dead standing trees. So a few days later I came back with my camera and tripod, hoping to be able to spot an active nesting cavity -

This is one of my favorite photos I've taken so far, from back in April

2.5 lb largemouth bass

Sorry for the break from photos, I've been doing a lot of fishing this summer. Photos will return! I'm going on a canoe trip to the boundary waters in September, but I haven't decided if I feel comfortable bringing my camera equipment yet

A record of 9-49 means that something is seriously wrong. A strike would be a good idea for them

I'm not gonna say the Rockies are good, but watching them play against the Cubs they are definitely better than I was expecting. They put up a good fight, but at the end of the day they still lost all 3 games
