Happy to announce the publication of "Queering the Korean Wave", a special issue of The East Asian Journal of Popular Culture edited by myself and @khursten.bsky.social that explores why Korean media (especially #Kpop) has been so influential among #LGBTQ+ audiences around the world

Looking forward to delivering a masterclass workshop on "Theorizing Asian Television Dramas" to junior scholars from across the Philippines at De La Salle University tomorrow. This is a follow-up to the keynote I delivered at a conference back in May to help presenters better theorize their work :)

'Jeongnyeon' finale sparks criticism for departing from original webtoon The conclusion of the tvN drama 'Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born,' which aired its final episode on Sunday, sparked significant backlash among fans of the original webtoon.

Apparently the original webtoon has a whole queer romantic sub-narrative that the drama cut (with a lot of webtoon fans complaining that the heteronormative ending undercuts the feminist themes of the drama)

Now that my teaching year is over, it's time to dive back into my research on idol fandom in Japan! From "Otaku Culture and Feminism," to "Stan Culture Economy" and "Recosidering Consumer Society," I have a lot of reading to catch up on!

Haruki Murakami’s New Novel Doesn’t Feel All That New “The City and Its Uncertain Walls” features all the author’s signature elements — and his singular voice — in a story he has told before.

As Murakami's newest novel hits bookshelves in English translation, I am reminded why I purged him from my Japanese literature class. Anyways, here's an excellent review of why his new novel isn't worth the read:

The era of slave contracts in the #Kpop industry never ended, it just transformed. Labor law needs to be revised to support idols as workers (who should absolutely unionise), but the current SK government is mostly uninterested in broadening human rights legislation right now
