If you're attending #IASPR2025 this week, please do consider joining our panel on romantic cultures in Philippine media! The lectures will also be available online after the conference is finished! @iaspr.bsky.social

Happy to announce the publication of "Queering the Korean Wave", a special issue of The East Asian Journal of Popular Culture edited by myself and @khursten.bsky.social that explores why Korean media (especially #Kpop) has been so influential among #LGBTQ+ audiences around the world
I am unironically in love with these "Oppa" instant ramyun noodles made by Korean manufacturer Ottogi for the Vietnamese market! Look at the stylised #Kpop star oppas on the front... do they look similar to a famous idol group to anyone? π€£
Looking forward to delivering a masterclass workshop on "Theorizing Asian Television Dramas" to junior scholars from across the Philippines at De La Salle University tomorrow. This is a follow-up to the keynote I delivered at a conference back in May to help presenters better theorize their work :)
These awesome students made a truly good video on #BL and some problems with tropes in the genre. With reference of course to work by @jameswelker.bsky.social and @tbaudinette.bsky.social #BoysLove #Manga #JapaneseManga

My article on the positive mental health benefits of #Kpop fandom for #LGBTQ+ fans during the COVID-19 pandemic - written together with PhD student and research assistant extraordinaire Kelsey E Scholes - has been accepted for publication next year in Kritika Kultura (archium.ateneo.edu/kk/)!
Preparing my slide deck for the Philippine K-Culture conference and reflecting on all the wonderful queer moments of #Kpop fandom I have experienced among #LGBTQ fans in Manila over half a decade of ethnographic research :)
Looking forward to my upcoming trip to Manila where I will be discussing the impacts of Korean media - especially via #Kpop fandom - on #LGBTQ+ cultures in the Philippines at the first ever "Philippine K-Culture Conference" at University of the Philippines Diliman next week π΅πππ³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈππ°π·

I've reached the pinnacle of my career because today I got to give my thoughts to a major Western news source about Moo Deng ππ₯°

Excited to announce I will be heading to Chicago next year for #SCMS2025, for a roundtable with Katie Morrisey, Lori Morimoto, Areum Jeong, and Latina Vidolova on "Adapting Media Studies Pedagogy for Today's Global Media Ecosystem." Yes, I'll be talking about BL (as usual)!

Apparently the original webtoon has a whole queer romantic sub-narrative that the drama cut (with a lot of webtoon fans complaining that the heteronormative ending undercuts the feminist themes of the drama)

Now that my teaching year is over, it's time to dive back into my research on idol fandom in Japan! From "Otaku Culture and Feminism," to "Stan Culture Economy" and "Recosidering Consumer Society," I have a lot of reading to catch up on!
As Murakami's newest novel hits bookshelves in English translation, I am reminded why I purged him from my Japanese literature class. Anyways, here's an excellent review of why his new novel isn't worth the read:

I wonder what Mieko Kawakami thinks hearing that Murakami Haruki has learnt nothing from her extremely pointed and much-needed critique of the sexism that structures his novels and his continued tendency to depict women via misogynistic paradigms?

My particular contribution emerges from my ethnographic investigation of Korean and Japanese media fandom in the Philippines, exploring how fantasies of Koreanness and Japaneseness are shaping the expression of romance in Philippine contemporary pop culture
Together with wonderful colleagues in Manila, next year I'll be drawing on my ethnography of Philippine media to put together a collection of essays on "kilig", the Philippine affective cultural response that shapes knowledge and experiences of romance ππ΅π
Did you know that #Kpop has become an important space for international LGBTQ+ fans to make sense of their queerness? If you'd like to learn more, check out this open access article published in Sexualities that I wrote together with Kelsey E. Scholes!

Actually very proud to announce that I am doing a thing: a new book series called "TV Matters" with Intellect! Television / media / pop culture scholars, take note and get in touch if you wanna write about TV! Please share far and wide.

The era of slave contracts in the #Kpop industry never ended, it just transformed. Labor law needs to be revised to support idols as workers (who should absolutely unionise), but the current SK government is mostly uninterested in broadening human rights legislation right now
Next week, the special issue on Queering the Korean Wave I've put together with my colleague Kristine Santos finally goes live, with a piece on OOF in it :)
Do encourage your student to share their paper as well!
